Philip Pullman, whose full name is Philip Nicholas Pullman, is a British author of books for children and young people. He is most well-known for the fantasy trilogy His Dark Materials, published between 1995 and 2000. Pullman was the son of a Royal Air Force officer who served in the British military.

During his childhood, he lived in several places, including Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), where his family eventually settled down. He entertained his younger brother with his fantastic stories as they were forced to travel far due to his father’s many postings. The young Philip was taken back to England to live with his grandparents after his father’s death, who had been killed in an aircraft accident.

Pullman went to live with his stepfather and stepmother in Australia when his mother remarried; afterward, the whole family relocated to Harlech, located in Wales. Pullman remained a resident in Oxford after completing his studies in English at the University of Oxford, where he also worked as a teacher.

In the meanwhile, Pullman started working on book after novel. His first works, The Haunted Storm (1972) and Galatea (1976) were written with an adult readership in mind. Pullman started writing several novels for children and young people in the 1980s and 1990s, starting with Count Karlstein; or Ride of the Demon Huntsman (1982). He continued this trend into the 2000s. The detective tales written by Pullman about Sally Lockhart and set in Victorian London were released between 1985 and 1994.

After that, Pullman started working on His Dark Materials, centered on a young girl named Lyra Belacqua (or Lyra Silvertongue), who lives in a parallel universe dominated by the evil Church (or Magisterium). The first book in the trilogy, Northern Lights (1995; also published as The Golden Compass, 1996), was honored with the Carnegie Medal in Literature in 1996 and became a successful feature film the following year (2007).

The subsequent books in the series were titled The Subtle Knife (1997) and The Amber Spyglass (2000). The next book was recognized with the Whitbread Book Award in 2001. After that, each novel was converted into a radio drama broadcast on the BBC, and the complete trilogy was turned into two stage plays produced at the National Theatre in London. 2019 saw the premiere of a television series adapted from the novels. In addition, Pullman has written a collection of companion pieces that focus on various characters who appear in the series.

Pullman was hailed as a suitable successor to authors J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, who were responsible for writing The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia by both readers and reviewers alike. Pullman, an outspoken atheist, registered against the injustices of institutional religion and instead advocated a humanistic ethic, unlike Lewis, who depicted religion in a favorable light. However, Lewis did this, whereas Pullman did not. Those viewers who felt the sitcom was making fun of the Roman Catholic Church were among those who voiced their disapproval of it.

In 2017, Pullman published La Belle Sauvage, the first book in his The Book of Dust series, which is intended to include three volumes. This book continues Lyra’s tale and chronicles her life before and after the events in His Dark Materials. However, rather than referring to The Book of Dust trilogy as a prequel or a sequel, Pullman referred to it as a “sequel.” In 2019, the second installment of the series, titled The Secret Commonwealth, was published.

In 2017, he released the graphic novel The Adventures of John Blake: Mystery of the Ghost Ship. Fred Fordham was the illustrator for this book. In 2012, when Pullman was taking a vacation from writing The Book of Dust, Penguin Classics requested him to choose and organize 50 of the Grimm brothers’ most well-known fairytales from their collection of over 200 tales. Pullman said, “They are not all of the same quality” when referring to the items. “There are those that are head and shoulders above others. And some are unquestionably timeless masterpieces. You can’t make a Grimm’s selection without including stories like “Rumpelstiltskin,” “Cinderella,” and so on.

In 2013, Pullman was chosen President of the Society of Authors, considered the “ultimate honor” bestowed upon a writer by the organization that represents British authors. Alfred, Lord Tennyson was the first person to hold this post. In the United Kingdom (U.K.), the first volume of The Book of Dust was released by Random House Children’s on October 19, 2017, while in the United States, it was released by Penguin Random House Children’s and David Fickling.

In The Secret Commonwealth, the second book in The Book of Dust series, which will be released in October 2019, there is a character named after Nur Huda el-Wahabi, who was 16 years old when she perished in the Grenfell Tower fire in London. As part of the Authors for Grenfell Tower charity auction, Pullman gave the person who placed the highest price the opportunity to choose the name of a character in the next trilogy. In the end, he was able to raise £32,400.

Pullman received the honor of Knight Bachelor as part of the New Year’s Honours list for 2019. Pullman was honored in March 2019 with the J. M. Barrie Award, given annually by the nonprofit organization Action for Children’s Art in recognition of a “lifetime’s achievement in delighting children.” Pullman, who has been a supporter of Norwich City F.C. his whole life, authored the preface to the club’s official history, which was released in 2020.
