Matthew Hanks LeCroy is an American former professional baseball catcher, first baseman, and designated hitter who is now the manager of the Rochester Red Wings. He was born on December 13, 1975, in the United States. When LeCroy played in Major League Baseball (MLB), he was the active player who had accumulated the most plate appearances in his career while never having stolen a base.
LeCroy is a graduate of Belton-Honea Path High School, which is located in Honea Path, South Carolina. After graduating from high school in 1994, he went to Clemson University to get a degree in elementary education. At Clemson, he was selected for the United States Olympic Baseball squad in 1996 and helped the party win a bronze medal. When LeCroy was called up to the central league team out of spring training in the year 2000, he experienced the major leagues for the first time. Between 2000 and 2002, LeCroy played for both the Twins and their AAA clubs, first for the Salt Lake Buzz and then, when the Twins switched their minor league affiliation in 2001, for the Edmonton Trappers. LeCroy’s time was divided between the Twins and their AAA teams during this period.
As a result of the difficulties he had playing catcher, LeCroy also tried his hand at first base and the designated hitter position. He played more games at the latter part in the big leagues than at first base and catcher combined. In the big companies, he was at his best in 2003 (batting.287 with 17 home runs and 64 RBI in 107 games) and 2005 (batting.260 with 17 home runs and 50 RBI in 101 games). After declining an offer from the Washington Nationals to manage one of their lower league clubs, LeCroy was offered and accepted a contract to play for the Minnesota Twins in the minor leagues in 2007. LeCroy began the 2007 campaign as the designated hitter for the Rochester Red Wings of the International League. He was a member of that team. When their fourth catcher José Morales went down with an injury on September 9, 2007, the big league team acquired the remainder of his contract, and he concluded the season with the Twins.
On October 11, 2007, the Twins attempted to assign LeCroy a position in their farm system; however, LeCroy declined the offer and became a free agent. LeCroy signed a minor league deal with the Oakland Athletics on February 15, 2008, which included an invitation to participate in the team’s spring training. LeCroy was sent to a minor league camp on March 16, 2008, and he subsequently requested and received permission from the Athletics to be released from his contract. After that, in April of 2008, LeCroy signed an agreement with the Lancaster Barnstormers, who play in the independent Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.
LeCroy would finish the season with Lancaster having played 94 games while hitting.326 with 22 home runs and 83 RBI before calling it a career and retiring.LeCroy is one of the few players in the big leagues who has ever pinch-hit a walk-off grand slam, and he accomplished this feat while playing for the Minnesota Twins against the Toronto Blue Jays. He never failed to wow with his power, as shown by his belting sixty home runs in only 472 games played throughout his eight years in the big leagues.
The Nationals decided to promote LeCroy to the position of managing their Class A minor league club, the Hagerstown Suns, in November of 2008. LeCroy was promoted to the work of manager of the Potomac Nationals in 2011, and as a result, the team moved up to play in the High Single-A Carolina League. In 2012, he was given the position of manager for the Double-A Harrisburg Senators. on November 2013; he succeeded Jim Lett as the Nationals’ bullpen coach after being appointed to a post on the coaching staff by new Nationals manager Matt Williams.
