Lee William Capra is a former professional baseball pitcher who was born in the United States of America on October 1, 1947. Between 1971 and 1977, he was a Major League Baseball (MLB) member, playing for the New York Mets and the Atlanta Braves. 1971–1977 were the most productive in Capra’s career. In 1974, Capra was one of the players selected for the National League (NL) All-Star squad and led the NL in earned run average (ERA). When he was a child, he received the nickname “Buzz” from a person who lived nearby. Capra was a shortstop for the Lane Technical College Prep High School baseball team, which is situated in the Roscoe Village neighborhood on the Northside of Chicago. Roscoe Village is home to the Capra family.
He began his pitching career at Illinois State University with a record of 17–5 and a 1.58 earned run average. In addition to playing shortstop, he had a successful start to his career as a pitcher there. During Capra’s last year with the Redbirds, the club’s final season, he served as the club’s co-captain and led the team to victory in the 1969 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship. After spending three years with the Mets’ minor league affiliate, he was called to the major league club in September of 1971 after having a record of 33–10 with a 2.49 earned run average and 367 strikeouts. In 1971, Capra came out of the bullpen thrice to appear. He started his career in the big leagues with two complete games in which he did not allow an earned run to be scored against him. However, in his third appearance, which took place at Shea Stadium against the St. Louis Cardinals, things did not go as smoothly for him as they had in the previous two.
Capra entered the game in the eleventh inning, faced seven batters, and retired only one of them (Jorge Roque, who bunted Joe Torre to second after Torre had led off the inning with a single). In addition, Capra split his time between the Mets and the Triple-A Tidewater Tides during the 1973 season. He played for both teams at various points. Even though he made ten appearances at the Tidewater level, every single one was a start; nevertheless, when he reached the primary league level, he was never used in any capacity other than relief. On June 27, 1973, Capra collected his first save in the major leagues by pitching four innings in which he allowed no hits and sealed the win against the Philadelphia Phillies. This performance earned Capra his first career save. Although he was included on the Mets squad that participated in the 1973 World Series, he did not play in the 1973 National League Championship Series or the 1973 World Series. Despite being on the roster of the Mets club that played in the 1973 World Series, he did not play in either series.
When the Mets went to spring training in 1974, they sold Capra’s contract to the Atlanta Braves instead of keeping it for themselves. His record as a reliever was 0–2 with one save (obtained the evening Hank Aaron hit his record-breaking 715th home run, which occurred on April 8, 1974) and a 3.06 earned run average (ERA) when he came in to replace an injured Ron Reed in the first inning of a game against the Padres on May 15. He only gave up three walks while collecting fifteen strikeouts, and he began a record-setting period for the Braves in which he tossed 26 innings without allowing an earned run to be scored against him. Capra set a new record for his team by winning nine consecutive games, including a perfect score of 6-0 during June, an earned run average of 1.05, three shutouts, and another complete game.
Yogi Berra, his previous manager with the Mets, selected him to play for the National League All-Star team on his way to recognizing him as the National League Player of the Month and choosing him for the National League All-Star squad. Capra’s notoriety in Atlanta has increased significantly due to his recent triumphant run.
