Lin Manuel Miranda

American actor, composer, lyricist, and writer Lin-Manuel Miranda was born on January 16, 1980, in New York City. He is known for producing and starring in musicals that blend contemporary music with the conventions of the stage. His most famous work is the hip-hop musical Hamilton, which is based on Alexander Hamilton.

Both of his parents worked in the helping professions; his father was a political strategist to several New York City mayors, while his mom was a therapist. His childhood household was filled with salsa and Broadway musicals. When Miranda was seven years old, he went with his family to see Les Misérables, and it profoundly affected him.

His musical interests spanned beyond classical music to include hip-hop and R&B, and he ultimately became a skilled lyricist and performer in these genres. During his senior year of high school, he became a mainstay of the school’s drama program after landing the lead role in The Pirates of Penzance by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. During this period, he met Stephen Sondheim, who would later become a mentor to Miranda, and John Kander, another musical theatre legend.

Throughout his time at Wesleyan, Miranda never stopped participating in musicals or working on his own compositions and performances. Washington Heights is a neighbourhood in northern Manhattan that he grew up in, and it was there that he penned the first draught of his musical, In the Heights.

After finishing her undergraduate studies at Wesleyan University in 2002, Miranda quickly launched a successful acting career in both cinema and television. In the past, he has been a part of an improvised hip-hop group called Freestyle Love Supreme, which has taken him all over the world, including to New York City and festivals like the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

The improvised musical Freestyle Love Supreme debuted in the 2019–20 season on Broadway. Together with fellow Wesleyan graduate Thomas Kail, he kept working on In the Heights. Miranda composed the music and lyrics for the musical, which included a book by Quiara Alegra Hudes and incorporated elements of hip-hop and salsa. Two Drama Desk Awards were given to the Off-Broadway production, which opened in February 2007 and ran through July 2007. Miranda was the lead performer.

After its March 2008 Broadway debut, the musical In the Heights was nominated for four Tony Awards, including best musical and best original score. A film adaptation of the musical was released in 2021, and Miranda had a small role in it.

After reading Ron Chernow’s 2004 biography of the Founding Father, Miranda got the idea to write a musical on Alexander Hamilton. To Miranda, Hamilton’s rise from obscurity on the tiny Caribbean island of Nevis to prominence as the first Secretary of the Treasury of the United States exemplified the American dream. As a result, Hamilton was full of life and energy, with a diverse ensemble with Miranda at the helm.

The musical debuted Off-Broadway at New York City’s Public Theater in January 2015, and due to its overwhelming success, it transferred to Broadway in early July of the same year. In 2016, Hamilton won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and received a record-breaking 16 Tony Award nominations, with Miranda winning numerous accolades, including best actor in a musical. In the end, the show took home eleven Tonys, missing the record by just one. Miranda took home awards for best book and best original score for Hamilton, which also won best musical. In July of 2016, he made his last appearance on the program.

The musical debuted on London’s West End and was an instant hit with audiences and critics alike the following year. There were seven Olivier Award nominations for the play, including best new play. Miranda also took home the prize for musical excellence. To recognize his contribution to the development of Hamilton, a work that defies easy classification, he was awarded a 2018 Kennedy Center Honor.

For a limited time in 2019, he played the title role again in Puerto Rico to raise money for the Flamboyan Arts Fund, a charity he established following Hurricane Maria in 2017 to restore support for the performing arts on the island. He has always fought for what was best for Puerto Rico. A filmed performance of Hamilton will air on television in 2020.
