The young Nicholson confused his grandma with his mother and thought he had an older sister. His father abandoned the family when he was young, and it wasn’t until he got famous that he found out the truth about his background. He moved to Los Angeles after finishing high school and got a job in MGM’s animation division.

In his early twenties, he became involved with the Players Ring Theater in Los Angeles and began performing in regional theatre productions and television guest roles. Around this time, a chance meeting with B-movie icon Roger Corman led to a starring role in Corman’s low-budget thriller The Cry Baby Killer (1958).

In the 10 years that followed, Nicholson was mostly seen in B-movies (including six more for Roger Corman), had small parts in A-movies, and made guest appearances on shows like The Andy Griffith Show and The Twilight Zone. The Trip (1967), a film about LSD hallucinations, and Head, a surreal comedy featuring the Monkees that has since achieved cult status, are two of Corman’s most well-known writing credits.

Nicholson’s breakthrough came in a supporting part as an alcoholic lawyer in Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper’s groundbreaking counterculture film Easy Rider, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award. Five Easy Pieces (1970), an episodic existentialist drama and a notable entry in the early 1970s Hollywood “art film” trend, is the film that catapulted him to fame.

Nicholson’s portrayal of a man alienated from his loved ones earned him an Oscar nomination for best actor. One of the most sexually explicit films to come out of Hollywood, Carnal Knowledge (1971) was Mike Nichols’s second smash hit as a director. Nicholson’s ability to bring humour into serious situations in order to underline the inherent irony was on display in his portrayal of a cold-blooded predatory chauvinist.

Nicholson played a loud military police officer who resentfully takes a young sailor to prison in the 1973 film, The Last Detail. For his work in this film, Nicholson was nominated for an Academy Award. Chinatown, directed by Roman Polanski and paying homage to film noir detective thrillers of the 1940s, is widely regarded as one of the greatest movies of all time. For his role as the arrogant private eye Jake Gittes, who realizes too late that he is impotent in the face of money and corruption, Nicholson received his fourth nomination.

Nicholson’s career as a film star was certain, therefore he only worked sporadically in the years that followed. Directed by Arthur Penn and starring Marlon Brando, the uneven but weirdly intriguing film The Missouri Breaks features Errol Morris, who also directed and featured in the revisionist western Goin’ South. Next, he played Jack Torrance in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980), in which he portrays a crazed serial killer who shouts “Heeeeere’s Johnny!” before going on a killing spree with an axe.

An iconic turn like this would have gone a long way toward ensuring Nicholson’s place in film history. Nicholson received three Academy Award nominations in the 1980s for his performances in Reds, Prizzi’s Honor, and Ironweed. An Academy Award was given to him for his portrayal of a drunk but honorable ex-astronaut in the film Terms of Endearment. Two of Nicholson’s most well-known roles from the ’80s were as the comically exaggerated Devil in The Witches of Eastwick and the Joker in Batman.
