Joe Schmidt is a retired American football player and coach born on January 19, 1932. He played at the college and professional levels of the sport. After 13 years in the NFL with the Detroit Lions, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame that year (1973).
Schmidt spent his formative years in the Brentwood neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and then spent the years 1950-1952 at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a Panthers’ football team member. His three years of tenacious play and inspired leadership were crucial to the Panthers’ 22-19 upset of the much favored University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish on October 11, 1952. During that season, numerous teams experimented with radio receivers to transmit messages, and Schmidt was tasked with receiving them. The outcome was a hilarious situation. Schmidt jumped when Lions assistant coach Buster Ramsey hurled the radio receiver on the ground in a rage following a particularly frustrating play.
Schmidt made nearly half of his team’s tackles that season, leading to his being awarded the NFL’s best defensive player the following year. Despite continuing shoulder issues in the next two seasons, Schmidt remained a key player on the Lions’ defense. The Sporting News placed him at #65 on their 100 Greatest Football Players list in 1999. Pitt retired his jersey number of 65 in honor of him. While playing with the Lions, he wore jersey number 56, which was later withdrawn. During Pat Swilling’s stint with the Lions, Schmidt permitted him to wear jersey number 56. He made four pass interceptions before retiring on March 10, 1966, to become an assistant coach with the Detroit Lions. The squad lost one more game this season than the previous year. In 1969, during the 50th anniversary of the National Football League, he was named the “Greatest Lion Ever,” and the club he played for improved much that year, going 9-4-1. Schmidt was arrested for drunk driving on December 14, only hours after the team’s 28-0 victory against the 11-2 Rams.
Schmidt had his most outstanding season the following year with the Lions at 10-4. They qualified for the playoffs for the first time in 13 years. The Rams were upset 28-23 in a pivotal Monday night matchup on December 14. The most severe setback occurred on November 8 when Detroit was defeated 19-17 by Tom Dempsey’s record 63-yard field goal. Schmidt benched Munson after the game and replaced him with Greg Landry, a third-year quarterback. Unfortunately, the postseason journey ended on December 26 after a 5-0 defensive victory against the Dallas Cowboys.
The 1971 Lions finished with a 7-6-1 record, but it was nothing compared to the loss of wide receiver Chuck Hughes in the last seconds of the team’s game against the Chicago Bears on October 24. Even though the club won an extra game the following season, owner William Clay Ford was critical of the team in the last round.
On January 12, 1973, Schmidt resigned, citing that “coaching isn’t fun anymore.” Schmidt’s outlook improved somewhat when he was inducted into the Hall of Fame three weeks later. Still, he never coached again and spent three decades as a manufacturer’s representative. With a career record of 43-35-7, Joe Schmidt is the most recent Lions coach to have a winning record.
