Gary Clark Jr. is an American blues guitarist and vocalist from Austin, Texas. His music incorporates hip-hop, rock, soul music, blues, and rock elements. In 2011, Clark released an EP titled “The Bright Lights” after signing a record deal with Warner Bros. Records. After that, the artist released Blak and Blu (2012) and The Story of Sonny Boy Slim (2015) as studio albums. Gary Clark Jr. Live (2014) and Gary Clark Jr. Live/North America (2017) both document the numerous live performances that Gary Clark has given throughout his career. He has performed on the same stage as B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, the Heartbreakers, Sir Rod Stewart, and the Rolling Stones.

At the beginning of the 2010s, Gary Clark, Jr. established himself as the best hope for contemporary electric blues with the release of his critically praised first album, Blak and Blu. He spent the remainder of the decade making good on that promise, first and foremost by carrying on the blues-rock legacy and broadening it to include modern funk, rock, and hip-hop.

In the beginning, Clark kept most of his cards close to his chest by highlighting the blues legacy of his hometown of Austin, Texas (which earned him the praise of local hero Jimmie Vaughan). But Clark was eager to take chances that other current blues guitarists didn’t, such as teaming with R&B singer Alicia Keys and modern rockers Foo Fighters while stretching out into political protest on the explosive album This Land, released in 2019.

Clark took up the guitar for the first time when he was 12 years old and spent his teenage years performing in the Austin region at every concert he could find. Clark was born and raised in Austin. Eventually, he became acquainted with Clifford Antone, the promoter and proprietor of Antone’s, the most prestigious blues club in the city. Antone started hosting performances by Clark at his establishment.

Impressive as he was in front of an audience, Clark quickly became one of the most talented musicians in Austin’s blues and rock scene. After releasing an independent album in 2005 titled Tribute, he created two albums for Hotwire Unlimited in 2008 titled 110 and Worry No More, both of which he also self-produced. In addition, an EP titled Gary Clark, Jr. was released by Hotwire in the year 2010.

But Clark wasn’t just a one-trick pony when it came to being a guitar gunslinger. In addition to that, he could sing, compose, and arrange. The 2007 film Honeydripper directed by John Sayles, and the film Full Count, for which he wrote the original soundtrack, featured him as an actor. 2010 Eric Clapton invited Clark to play at the Crossroads Guitar Festival. Following the publication of a video of the performance, which included Clark, Warner Bros. Records offered Clark a recording contract.

Soon after, Clark started working on his first album for a big label in the studio. Before the album Blak and Blu came out in the autumn of 2012, it was preceded by a digital extended play (EP) titled Bright Lights, published in 2011. It was a Top Ten smash, and he won a Grammy Award for the category of Best Traditional R&B Performance for the song “Please Come Home.” The CD better captured Clark’s passionate, emotional, and sometimes beautifully delicate live shows, and it was his second release after the remarkable two-disc Live, recorded during an 18-month tour behind Blak and Blu.
