An American swimmer, Dara Torres finished her career with 12 Olympic medals, including four gold medals. Her tying of the record for the most medals won by an American female Olympian was accomplished with her 12 victories. Torres was the first American swimmer to participate in five Olympic Games. Both of these events were held in that year. After a break of four years, she competed in the Olympics again. She won the gold medal once again in the women’s 4×100-meter freestyle relay at the Olympic Games held in Barcelona, Spain, in 1992.
