Professional American football team headquartered in Detroit. The Lions are an NFC team that has won four Super Bowls in the NFL’s history. The original location of the business was in Portsmouth, Ohio. It opened in 1930. The Spartans were one of two small-town teams in the early NFL. The Spartans enjoyed middling success and made the first playoff game in NFL history, losing 9-0 to the Chicago Bears at the end of the 1932 season. After being purchased and moving to Detroit in 1934, the team adopted the moniker “Lions” to contrast with the rival baseball team, the Detroit Tigers. As a long-standing tradition, the Lions’ home game on Thanksgiving Day was first organized by the team’s ownership in their inaugural season in Detroit. Earl Clark, a single-wing tailback for the Lions, led the team to its first NFL title in 1935.

The 1940s were a tough decade for the Lions, with only two winning seasons. Running back Byron R. White, who played for the team in Detroit from 1940 to 1941, is often regarded as the best player of this era. After signing future Hall of Famers Doak Walker and Bobby Layne before the 1950 season, the Detroit Lions quickly rose to prominence. In 1952 and 1953, the Detroit Lions defeated the Cleveland Browns in the NFL title game, but in 1954, the Browns avenged their earlier losses by defeating Detroit. In 1957, the Lions faced the Browns for a fourth time for the NFL championship. Detroit won by a comfortable 45-point margin, giving the franchise its third title in six years.

In spite of a ferocious defence led by defensive back Dick Lane, tackle Alex Karras, and linebackers Joe Schmidt and Wayne Walker, the 1960s were a less fruitful decade for the team, as they finished second in their division to the Green Bay Packers from 1960 to 1962 and missed the playoffs throughout the decade. Author George Plimpton’s brief stint with the team as the “last-string” quarterback during the 1963 preseason, as documented in his book Paper Lion and later in a movie of the same name, is probably the most memorable thing about these Lions. During the 24 years between 1958 and 1981, the Detroit Tigers made only one playoff berth despite ending with a winning percentage above.500 in most years.

After finishing with a 4-5 record in the strike-shortened 1982 season, the Lions nevertheless made it to the playoffs twice in the early 1980s. However, both times they were eliminated in the first round by the Washington Redskins. Midway through the 1980s, the Lions had fallen to the division’s cellar after losing their first playoff game in 1983.

Reviving the Lions’ fortunes was the 1989 draught selection of Barry Sanders, a running back who would go on to be named to the Pro Bowl in each of his first 10 seasons in the NFL. Despite losing the 1991 NFC title game to the Redskins, the Lions went on to make the playoffs four more times between 1992 and 1997. The Lions did not win more than one postseason game in any of those years.

Matt Millen, a former NFL linebacker, was hired as general manager in 2001 despite his lack of front-office experience. Millen presided over one of the worst runs in NFL history, as the Lions’ record fell to 31-84 under his watch, and many fans voiced their displeasure with his retention in the position. The Lions went 0-16 in 2008 under his leadership, leading to his dismissal.

After selecting quarterback Matt Stafford with the first overall pick in the 2009 NFL draught, the Detroit Lion’s passing attack flourished with the help of All-Pro wide receiver Calvin Johnson. The Lions finally reached the playoffs after 12 long years in 2011. After that, the team had two losing seasons in a row, prompting another coaching change and an effort at rebuilding. In 2014, under the direction of the new coaching staff, the team won 11 games and qualified for the playoffs again, where it was eliminated in the first round by eventual champion Chicago. Detroit made a strong comeback the next year to make the playoffs after missing out in 2015, but they lost their playoff opener again. The Lions have since gone an extended period without making the playoffs, with 2019’s 3-12-1 record being the worst of that span.

Lane was three months old when his mother abandoned him, and he was raised by the woman who discovered him in a garbage can. Before enlisting in the U.S. Army, he played football for a year and a half at the junior college level. When Lane, then 24 years old, stepped into the Los Angeles Rams’ offices in 1952, he had played only a handful of games of organized football, all of which had been with his army base team. The Rams gave Lane a go at the offensive end before moving him to the defensive backfield, where he excelled, and ultimately awarded him a seat on the club. After breaking the record for most interceptions in a season with 14, he started right away as a rookie and completely dominated the league.

Lane, who stood at 6 feet 1 inch (1.85 meters) and weighed roughly 200 pounds (91 kg), was considerably larger than the receivers he covered. As a result, he had a reputation as a brutal tackler. The league eventually outlawed his “Night Train Necktie,” a famous technique in which he wrapped his arms around an opponent’s neck and wrestled him to the ground. Lane spent the first two seasons of his NFL career with the Los Angeles Rams before being transferred to the Chicago Cardinals in 1954. While playing with the Bears, he made ten interceptions, which led the NFL. This was the first of seven Pro Bowl selections for his career. In 1960 he was traded to the Detroit Lions, and after the 1965 season he decided to retire.

Upon retiring, Lane worked as the tour manager for comedian Redd Foxx and later coached at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, and Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Before her untimely demise in 1963, he was married to legendary rhythm and blues singer Dinah Washington. In addition to being one of only four cornerbacks on the NFL’s 75th-anniversary squad, which was selected in 1994, Lane was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1974.

Detroit is a major city in the state of Michigan and the county seat of Wayne County. It faces Windsor, Ontario, Canada, across the Detroit River. In 1701, French merchant Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac founded the city by constructing a fort on the river and naming it Fort Pontchartrain du Détroit in honor of his patron. The fort was later renamed simply Detroit by the British. The city’s name became associated with the U.S. auto industry in the 20th century. The population was 1,820,584 in the Detroit-Livonia-Dearborn Metro Division and 4,296,250 in the Detroit-Warren-Livonia Metro Area in 2010. In 2020, the population was 639,111 in the Detroit-Warren-Livonia Metro Area and 1,793,561 in the Detroit-Livonia-Dearborn Metro Division.

The city of Detroit sits on a wide, somewhat level plain. There are still some examples of the early 19th-century hexagonal street layout in the central business district, but this design was mainly eradicated as the city grew. The majority of the city’s commercial and civic structures, such as the City-County Building, Cobo Hall, Cobo Arena, and the Renaissance Center with a 73-story hotel, can be found in the downtown area near the river. In contrast, the Detroit Cultural Center, which houses several of the city’s museums and the public library, can be found about 2 miles to the northwest. Detroit is surrounded by its suburbs, with the exception of Hamtramck and Highland Park.

The city of Detroit saw a massive increase in its population during the years 1850 and 1950. The city’s booming industry drew people from all around, initially mainly Europeans but later included African Americans fleeing Jim Crow laws in the South. There has been a steady reduction in population since the mid-1950s, primarily as a result of the white flight to the suburbs and the death of the manufacturing sector. At the turn of the 21st century, African Americans made up roughly 80% of the population.

Detroit’s economy is exceptionally susceptible to the fortunes of the car industry, despite the city’s varied manufacturing and shipping basis. Therefore, economic booms and busts have had a greater impact on Motor City than on the rest of the country. The city’s factories create more than just cars and car parts; they also make steel, chemicals, and machinery. The importance of the service industry is growing. Detroit’s transportation system is primarily based on roads, including many major motorways.

In 1987, construction was finished on the Detroit People Mover, a light-rail system that runs through the city’s downtown. At first, it was supposed to be a part of a larger public transportation network. The necessary funds never materialized, however, and the People Mover quickly declined to the level of a tourist attraction. Few locals were ready to advocate for rail transit in a city so dependent on the vehicle. Both a bridge and a tunnel lead to Windsor from the city. Great Lakes trade makes frequent use of the Detroit River, and the area’s ports process substantial volumes of raw materials. About 17 miles southwest of downtown Detroit is Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport.

The city is home to a number of higher education institutions, including Wayne State University and the University of Detroit Mercy. Cranbrook Academy of Art, located in nearby Bloomfield Hills, and the Detroit Institute of Arts are two of the city’s most prestigious cultural institutions. The Motown Historical Museum is located in the same building as the original Motown Record Corporation, which was created by Berry Gordy, Jr. The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, both located in Dearborn, Michigan, are excellent places to learn about the history of transportation in the United States.

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra has been performing since 1914, and now, you may catch summer concerts by this group at the Meadow Brook Music Festival in nearby Rochester. Belle Isle Park is an island in the Detroit River that is home to a zoo for kids, an aquarium, and a botanical garden. A few of Detroit’s professional sports teams are the NBA’s Pistons, MLB’s American League Tigers, NFL’s Lions, and NHL’s Red Wings, whose success has earned the city the nickname “Hockeytown, U.S.A.”
