The Kansas City Chiefs are an NFL franchise headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri that competes in the AFC. They won three league titles and both Super Bowls IV and LIV while playing in the defunct American Football League.

When the American Football League was formed in 1960, the Texans—then based in Dallas and given that name—were among the league’s inaugural eight franchises. Lamar Hunt, the owner of the Texans, founded the AFL after being rejected by the NFL in his bid to buy the Chicago Cardinals. Hunt was joined in this endeavor by other would-be NFL owners who had also been rejected.

Hunt recruited Hank Stram as the Texans’ first head coach, and Stram guided the team to two mediocre seasons. Before the 1962 season, the Texans signed quarterback Len Dawson, and with him at the helm, Dallas went 11-3, winning the American Football League title game against the Houston Oilers. Hunt opted to move the Texans to Kansas City in 1963 because the Dallas market could not support two football teams despite the team’s success.

When the AFL West realigned in 1966, the newly called Chiefs were once again in the middle of the pack. Once again, they won 11 games and the AFL championship that year. After losing to the Green Bay Packers 35-10 in the inaugural AFL-NFL World Championship Game, the Kansas City Chiefs were a part of one of the most momentous occasions in gridiron football history. The Chiefs had the best defense in the NFL in 1969, led by future Hall of Famers Willie Lanier, Bobby Bell, and Buck Buchanan.

As a result, they won the AFL title and went on to the Super Bowl for a second straight year. With the merger of the AFL and NFL in 1970, the Super Bowl between the Chiefs and the Minnesota Vikings was the last game ever played by an AFL team. After making the playoffs once again in 1971, Kansas City went through a stretch in which they finished with losing records in nine of the fourteen seasons between 1972 and 1985.

The Chiefs drafted linebacker Derrick Thomas and signed head coach Marty Schottenheimer in 1989. Schottenheimer took Kansas City to the playoffs in his second year with the organization, and in 1993, the Chiefs went all the way to the AFC title game, where they fell to the Buffalo Bills behind quarterback Joe Montana. The Chiefs had a league-best 13 wins in 1995 thanks to a defense led by Thomas and defensive end Neil Smith, but they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Indianapolis Colts. In 1997, the Chiefs shared the league’s best record with the Denver Broncos but still lost in the wild-card round.

Kansas City returned to the playoffs in 2003 after a five-year absence thanks to a high-scoring offense led by running back Priest Holmes and tight end Tony Gonzalez. The Chiefs had another great regular season followed by postseason heartbreak when they were defeated by the Colts at home. After a few more average seasons, including a return to the playoffs in 2006, the franchise hit rock bottom in 2008 with a 2-14 record, prompting the appointment of a new front office and coaching staff that eventually led to Kansas City’s return to the postseason in 2010. The improvement was only temporary, however, as, after Kansas City’s poor 2011 season, the franchise once again made a coaching change, this time after the 2012 season.

The Chiefs’ play drastically improved in 2013 under new head coach Andy Reid, who led them to 11 victories and a spot in the playoffs. After that, they went on to lose their first playoff game, making it 20 years since they had won in the postseason. After the 2015 season, the Chiefs ended their losing run with a 30-0 victory over the Houston Texans, but they were then knocked from the playoffs by the reigning champion New England Patriots. The 2016 season was the greatest for the Chiefs in almost a decade, as they went 12-4 and won their division. However, they once again fell in the first round of the playoffs.

In 2017, Kansas City repeated its division title success, only to be eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. The Chiefs’ 12-4 record in 2018 was tied for the best in the AFC, thanks in large part to the play of second-year superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs won their first playoff game, but they lost the AFC title game in overtime to the Patriots. Injuries hampered Mahomes and the Chiefs offense in 2019, but it didn’t stop Kansas City from winning 12 games and hosting the AFC championship for the second year in a row.

This time, Mahomes was at the helm, and the Chiefs won, bringing Kansas City to the Super Bowl for the first time in 50 years. There, they rallied in the fourth quarter to beat the San Francisco 49ers, 31-20. In 2020, the Chiefs maintained their dominant status, winning a league-high 14 wins throughout the regular season. The Chiefs advanced to their second straight Super Bowl, but this time they were eliminated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Chiefs beat the Cleveland Browns by a touchdown in the playoffs and then beat the Buffalo Bills in the AFC championship game.

After his white mother and Black father divorced when he was six, Mahomes spent most of his childhood in Tyler, Texas. His dad, Pat Mahomes, was a middle-inning reliever for the Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, and Pittsburgh Pirates during his 11 years in the major leagues. Young Mahomes frequently accompanied his dad to ballgames, where he picked up pointers on the field from baseball greats such as Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter. His godfather was LaTroy Hawkins, a former MLB pitcher.

Mahomes, who has always been a talented athlete with a strong throwing arm, was a three-sport star at Whitehouse High (near Tyler). He was a brilliant basketball player who also performed at an even higher level in baseball and football. In his final year as a pitcher, he batted.450 and had a 23-8 record with 16 strikeouts while throwing a no-hitter at 93 miles per hour, making him the number 35 overall prospect in Texas.

He was the starting quarterback during his senior year and threw for 4,619 yards and 50 touchdowns while also rushing for almost 1,000 yards. MaxPreps, a website that connects college coaches with high school athletes, named Mahomes their 2013–14 Male Athlete of the Year. Even though the Detroit Tigers took him in the 37th round of the 2014 Major League Baseball draft, Mahomes opted to play football at Texas Tech University, one of only three FBS schools to offer him a scholarship.

Mahomes threw up baseball following his freshman year at Texas Tech when he made a catastrophic pitching appearance. In the realm of football, things were very different. As a sophomore, 6-foot-3, 230-pound Mahomes was already one of the best quarterbacks in the country and only the sixth quarterback in FBS history to pass for 4,000 yards and 30 touchdowns and also rush for at least 450 yards and 10 scores in a single season.

As a junior in 2016, he threw for 5,052 yards, which put him first in FBS, and he finished first in total yards gained, with 5,337 yards between passing and running, earning him the Sammy Baugh Trophy as the top passer in college football.

Mahomes skipped his senior year of high school to enter the 2017 NFL draft, where he was eventually selected by the Kansas City Chiefs with the 10th overall pick in a trade-up. The Chiefs had great hopes for Mahomes, but he saw limited action as a rookie since he was second-string behind Alex Smith at quarterback. However, Mahomes took over as the starter after Smith was sent to the Washington Redskins at the conclusion of the 2017 season.

In 2018, he more than delivered, becoming only the second player in NFL history to pass for 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in a single season. The Chiefs went 12-4 throughout the regular season with Mahomes at the helm of their dynamic attack, and they made it all the way to the AFC Championship Game, where they met the New England Patriots and lost in overtime. Mahomes, at the tender age of 23, was named the league’s most valuable player after a season in which he set numerous records and was named to the Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro.

Mahomes missed two games for the Chiefs in 2019 with a dislocated kneecap. However, under his leadership, the club improved to 12-4 and returned to the AFC Championship Game, where he threw three touchdown passes in a 35-24 triumph over the Tennessee Titans to send the Chiefs to the Super Bowl for the first time in 50 years. During the second half of Super Bowl LIV, Mahomes and the Chiefs trailed the 49ers by 10 points after he threw two interceptions.

But in the fourth quarter, he completely changed the game, leading the Chiefs to a 31-20 victory with two touchdown passes on consecutive drives. Super Bowl MVP Mahomes became the youngest quarterback to win the honor after completing 26 of 42 passes for 286 yards and rushing for a touchdown. He was given the most lucrative deal in the history of American professional sports, a 10-year extension worth over $503 million, the offseason after his MVP season. Because of his background in baseball, Mahomes was able to unleash his passes from a variety of angles in addition to having a powerful arm.

In other instances, he appeared to casually flick his wrist, like a second baseman turning a double play. In other situations, he would throw to the side of his body, make no-look passes à la point guard, or even switch to his left hand. Many commentators pointed out that he was the first quarterback in history to play the position so differently.
