Because of this, he was able to increase his scoring output from 7.8 points per game during his previous season with Seattle to 13.3 points per game.

His performance against the Houston Rockets in March 1995, in which he scored 50 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, and his performance against the Orlando Magic a few weeks later, in which he scored 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 15 assists, were both highlights of his career. The fact that he was so productive during his time in Philadelphia, however, made it possible for him to seek other options after the 1995–1996 season. This made it look as if his time in Philadelphia was nothing more than a brief diversion. He signed with his hometown team, the Boston Celtics, and even though he never again reached the level of play he had attained with the Philadelphia 76ers, he carved out a niche for himself in Boston.

Barros was moved from the Utah Jazz to the Dallas Mavericks during the summer of the 2000 NBA season. The agreement also included the Golden State Warriors and the Mavericks’ rival club, the Dallas Mavericks. Until the start of the 2000-01 season, the Mavericks had already traded Barros to the Detroit Pistons. With the Pistons, Barros would go on to play 89 games throughout two seasons, averaging 7.5 points per contest until being dismissed in 2002.

After that, he sat out of the NBA for close to two years until making his return to the Celtics during the conclusion of the 2003–2004 regular season, first in the role of an assistant coach and then in the one of a player. In the last game he played, he scored six points. He finished his career in the league with career averages of 10.5 points, 1.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and a three-point shooting accuracy of 41.1 percent. He retired from the league.

Following his retirement from professional basketball, Dana Barros accomplished a lifelong desire by building the Dana Barros Sports Complex in Mansfield, Massachusetts. This facility serves as both a sports club and a social club. Nevertheless, Barros was surprised by how much more expensive the project turned out to be. After racking up enormous debts, he finally decided to walk away from the company in the year 2006.

After working as an assistant coach for the men’s basketball team at Northeastern University for two months in 2006, Barros resigned from that post in June 2006 to take a position as the Director of Recreation for the city of Boston. Barros has been in his current capacity since July 1, 2006. At the moment, Barros is employed with the Celtics’ front office, namely within the department of media relations.
