Waltrip shared the news on his Instagram account the next morning, revealing that earlier in the day, when he was in Las Vegas, he had become friendly with a family who was also planning to attend the festival. In 1985, Waltrip made his NASCAR Cup debut at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the Coca-Cola 600 while driving for Dick Bahre. After only five starts, he ended the season in 57th place overall despite having a better race result (he was 28th). His brother Darrell came in first place in the race. At the same moment, Earnhardt contacted Waltrip and questioned an earlier move early in the race in which Waltrip bumped him out of the way and Dale replied by flipping the bird.
