While there, in the 1988–1989 season, he oversaw further improvement in the second year that led to the Knicks’ first division title in 18 years. After having disagreements with the Knicks’ front office, Pitino went to college basketball in 1989 when he was given a position coaching the legendary University of Kentucky basketball team.
The University of Kentucky was under NCAA penalties for the first two years of Pitino’s tenure as head coach, but he still managed to get the Wildcats all the way to the Final Four in the second year they were eligible. Subsequently, he led Kentucky to the 1996 NCAA championship and the 1997 final game. In 1997, he signed the richest coaching deal in NBA history to become the head coach and director of basketball operations for the Boston Celtics. During his stint with the Celtics, the team struggled mightily and never had a winning record. In the midst of the 2000-01 campaign, he decided to leave.
Pitino went back to college after his initial professional setback, accepting the head coaching position at the University of Louisville in 2001. In 2005 and 2012, he led his school to the Final Four. In 2012–13, Louisville set a program record by winning 35 games, and they went on to win their second NCAA title under Pitino in the tournament. While Louisville’s basketball team remained among the best in the nation after their 2013 championship, the program was rocked by scandal in 2015 when a former escort claimed that a former member of the basketball staff at Louisville had paid multiple escorts to have sex with players and recruits between 2010 and 2014.
While Pitino denied involvement, the NCAA initiated an investigation, and in February of 2016, the school announced it would not be participating in postseason play in the 2015–16 year. The NCAA handed down his suspension in June 2017, keeping him out of Louisville’s lineup for the first five ACC games of the 2017–18 season. A number of NCAA basketball programs were implicated in a widespread “pay for play” scandal that was revealed by federal investigators in September 2017.
An executive from Adidas, the sportswear company that sponsored the University of Louisville’s athletics department, allegedly paid $100,000 to a basketball recruit’s family to get him to play for the Cardinals. Though Pitino was not singled out by name, the university swiftly placed him on administrative leave and then fired him “with cause” the following month.
The NCAA revoked Louisville’s 2013 title and 2012 Final Four berth in February of 2018. Pitino took over as head coach of the Panathinaikos basketball team in Greece in December. The team won the Greek Cup in 2019, however, Pitino resigned as a coach later that year.
