The San Antonio Spurs are an NBA franchise representing Alamo City. The NBA team participates as a part of the Southwest Division of the Western Conference. After beginning play in 1967 as the Dallas Chaparrals of the American Basketball Association (ABA), the franchise relocated to San Antonio in 1973 and became an NBA member the following year. It has won five league titles and boasts such legends as David Robinson, Tim Duncan, and Manu Ginobili among its alumni.

The present Spurs were originally formed as the Dallas Chaparrals and competed in the American Basketball Association. During the 1967 ABA season, the Chaparrals were one of the 12 teams who participated. People in Dallas lost interest in basketball after the first several years, and attendance at the pavilion fell steadily from there. Therefore, the proprietors rebranded Dallas as Texas in an effort to appeal to a wider regional audience, but to little avail.

Together, this plus the team’s failure to make the playoffs in 1972 led to the selling of the franchise. A consortium of San Antonio, Texas, businesspeople decided to take the franchise over and invest in it. They changed the team name to the Spurs and its colors from the Chaparrals’ blue, red, and white to the silver and black we all know and love.

They were captained by James Silas and Swen Nater, and halfway through the season, future Hall of Famer George Gervin was brought in to bolster the roster. Although they had a successful regular season, they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Indiana Pacers. The next season would see a repeat performance, with the Pacers once again becoming the “black beast” of the Spurs. The Spurs were knocked out of the playoffs for the third straight season, this time by the New York Nets, in the 1975-1976 season (the ABA’s final season).

The league disbanded in 1976, leaving the Spurs without a competitor, but the NBA accepted the team that year, along with the Pacers, the Nuggets, and the Nets. There were several in the NBA at the time who didn’t think ABA teams could compete at a high level. The Spurs made an early decision to ignore the doubters, and they surprised everyone by finishing the season with a 44-38 record, only to be defeated in the first round by the Celtics. Even though the Spurs had two consecutive successful regular seasons, the Bullets twice prevented them from winning back-to-back NBA championships. Nonetheless, the Spurs were a perennial postseason contender during their first seven seasons in the league, winning five division titles in that span.

The San Antonio franchise had its share of highs and lows throughout the 1980s. The Spurs were able to keep their competitive edge from their earlier years, and they had a winning streak of multiple seasons in a row without ever winning an NBA championship. The team’s fortunes turned around during the 1984–1985 season. Because of the transaction that sent George Gervin to the Houston Rockets, the San Antonio Spurs’ promising rookie season came to an end. The team struggled after losing its star player.

They considered seriously relocating the club to another city after losing so many games and losing interest from the fans. But just when the Spurs’ owners and fans needed it most, a jolt of energy arrived to lift spirits. Texas selected David Robinson as the first overall choice in the 1987 draft. The San Antonio Spurs were unable to use their center until 1989 because he was serving in the United States Navy.

Up until that point, Alvin Robertson had been Hemisfair Arena’s biggest draw. A 1.93-foot-tall point guard, he topped the NBA in thefts for three consecutive seasons and was named the league’s best defender in 1985–1985. The Spurs looked forward to the new decade with confidence thanks to the play of the Florida native and the emergence of a promising young player in Sean Elliot. They consistently made the playoffs year after year but never quite made the leap to elite status. Spurs owner McCombs responded by dismissing Brown as head coach and replacing him with the likes of Bob Bass, Jerry Tarkanian, and John Lucas.

Since the team had been eliminated in the first round of the playoffs for the previous few years, Lucas was sacked after the 1993–1994 season and replaced by Bob Hill for the next year. For the young rebounder Dennis Rodman, the Pistons traded Sean Elliot. After a difficult season in Detroit, Elliot came back to the black and silver the next year, and the squad went on to finish with a 62-20 record. In recognition of his outstanding performance, David Robinson was named the league’s Most Valuable Player.

The Spurs made it to the conference finals, where they would have faced the Rockets for the first time in team history had Houston not eliminated San Antonio. After a season of persistent tension with his teammates, Rodman decided to depart the squad that summer. The 1995–1996 season was the Spurs’ second consecutive successful campaign, but they once again fell short in the playoffs against the Jazz. At the time, no one could have predicted that the next season would be the worst in franchise history. Robinson’s absence from the court all season due to an injury was felt keenly by the Hill-coached squad. Gregg Popovich was hired to lead the Spurs after his team went 20-62 in his first season.San Antonio Spurs photo

San Antonio’s hopes of making deep playoff runs in 1998–1999 were dashed when a lockout shortened the season to 50 games. Despite this, they finished with a 37-13 record and went 11-1 in the playoffs en route to the championship game. There, they’d face off against the New York Knicks, a team they’d end up beating in five games to claim their first NBA championship. The Spurs maintained virtually the same core of players from their championship run for the next three years but were eliminated from contention by the Suns and Lakers, the latter twice.

There were two major reasons why the 2002–2003 season was so thrilling for the franchise. David Robinson’s final year in the NBA coincided with the debut of a brand new arena, the SBC Center. A number of new players, such as Frenchman Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, and Steve Kerr, made this squad significantly different from its predecessors. They finished the regular season with 60 wins and advanced to the NBA Finals, where they lost to the New Jersey Nets. The San Antonio Spurs beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 4 games to 2 to claim their second championship in franchise history. Tim Duncan, who had a fantastic year, was awarded the Finals MVP after having been selected the NBA’s Most Valuable Player for the whole season.

The Spurs had another fantastic season the following year sans David Robinson, but they were eliminated from the playoffs by the Los Angeles Lakers. The San Antonio squad was not deterred, and just a year later they would once again make history. The Denver Nuggets, Seattle SuperSonics, and Phoenix Suns were all dispatched in the playoffs, leaving only the Detroit Pistons as opponents in the quest for a third NBA championship. With strong play from Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili, the Spurs won the series 4-3.

The San Antonio club had appeared unbeatable year after year, but Popovich’s men were brought back to earth by the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference playoffs in 2005–2006. Thankfully, the organization was able to bounce back swiftly from the devastating loss and won its fourth championship the following season. With a final record of 58-24, the Spurs advanced to face the Cleveland Cavaliers in the championship round after sweeping the Nuggets, Suns, and Jazz. Even though Cleveland lost the series 4-0, they gave their opponents a tough time in every game.

Despite the team’s continued postseason appearances after these promising stretches, San Antonio was beginning to feel the effects of a growing injury epidemic. They returned to the NBA Finals in the 2012–2013 season, but this time they were eliminated in Game 7 by the Miami Heat, led by LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh. The Spurs maintained the nucleus of the team that had previously brought them success, adding sniper Marco Bellinelli and rising star Kawhi Leonard. After another outstanding season, they continued their success in the playoffs by eliminating formidable opponents. Of course, the Spurs would get another shot at the NBA Finals against the Miami Heat; second chances are a part of life.

As it turned out, even LeBron James and crew were helpless this time. Gregg Popovich’s team won the series 4-1, as their defense and passing annihilated the Heat. Kawhi Leonard proved once again why he is one of the league’s brightest stars by winning Finals MVP honors. With Duncan gone and Parker and Ginobili at the twilight of their careers, the Spurs had to constantly retool over the next five years. Even without Leonard, the Spurs still have a legitimate shot of winning it all in the postseason. The team will be forced to make a major roster change during the 2018 summer season. The trade that sent Leonard to the Raptors involved DeMar DeRozan. With Kawhi at the helm, the Toronto Raptors won the NBA title.
