The New York Mets are an MLB club representing the New York metropolitan area. They are headquartered in Flushing, Queens. The Mets have five NL crowns and two World Series titles.

The Mets may be traced back to 1959, when New York attorney Bill Shea announced plans to organize the Continental League, with a New York team serving as a charter member. Although it was guaranteed two teams in both the American and National Leagues as part of baseball’s expansion in 1960, the league was disbanded the following year. Named after an earlier New York baseball team, the Metropolitans of the 19th century American Association, the name “Mets” was chosen over several other suggestions when the organization was formed in 1961. This was due to the name’s shortness, ease of use, similarity to the corporate name, and widespread fan acceptance. After two seasons at the Polo Grounds, the team, often known as the Amazin’ Mets or simply the Amazins, relocated to the new Shea Stadium.

Over-the-hill veterans like Gil Hodges, Duke Snider, and Yogi Berra were among the early Mets’ most popular players as they were coached by Casey Stengel, the Yankees’ manager during their five-peat in the World Series. Despite this throwback effort, the team lost a record-setting 120 games in their inaugural season, earning the moniker “Lovable Losers.”

After falling behind the Chicago Cubs by 9.5 games in mid-August in the National League East, the 1969 team, led by future Hall of Famers Tom Seaver and Nolan Ryan, came to be known as the “Miracle Mets” after winning an improbable World Series championship by defeating the favored Baltimore Orioles in the World Series. After signing legendary center fielder Willie Mays in 1972, the Mets returned to the World Series in 1973, where they were defeated in seven games by the Oakland Athletics. The team’s record remained middling throughout the rest of the decade.

Powerful hitters like Darryl Strawberry and Gary Carter, together with youthful pitchers like Dwight Gooden, Jesse Orosco, and Sid Fernandez, revitalized the Mets in the 1980s. The 1986 Mets went on to win 108 games and their second World Series trophy by defeating the Boston Red Sox in a series that will live in baseball lore because of first baseman Bill Buckner’s error in the bottom of the 10th inning of game six.

Some of the Mets’ brightest young stars struggled with substance usage, and as a result, the team won the NL East only once and went winless in the postseason for the remainder of the decade. The team went through a rough patch in the early 1990s, losing 103 games in 1993, its worst season since 1965. But by the late ’90s, the team had improved to the point that it reached the World Series in 2000, led by slugging catcher Mike Piazza; unfortunately, the Mets fell to their archrivals, the Yankees, in the so-called “Subway Series.” In 2006, the Mets once again qualified for the postseason, but the following year they missed the playoffs after blowing a seven-game lead with 17 games left. After leading their division for most of the month of August, the Mets were eliminated from postseason contention for a second straight year after losing their last regular season game at home in 2008. After that setback, the Mets went through a long stretch of losing seasons, often finishing last in the NL East.

The Mets finally got out of their funk in 2015, when a team led by promising young pitchers won their division and reached the World Series, where they were defeated by the Kansas City Royals in five games. After making the playoffs again the next year, the Mets struggled in 2017 and ended up losing 92 games. Even in the 2020s, the Mets’ playoff drought persisted.

Yogi Berra was a professional baseball player, manager, and coach for the New York Yankees for 18 seasons. He appeared in a record 14 World Series during that time, and the Yankees won 10 of them. Additionally, he set standards for catchers of his day that have since been surpassed, including the record for most home runs hit by a catcher, the record for most games in which he made no errors, and the record for most chances handled in a row.

From the time he was a little boy, Berra lived in the Italian neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, where he participated in a wide variety of sports, including softball, baseball, soccer, football, and roller hockey. He got his start in baseball on a YMCA squad and eventually moved on to the American Legion. Like the vast majority of catchers, he batted left-handed and threw right-handed. Because most batters are right-handed, they position themselves to the left of home plate, making it difficult for a left-handed catcher to throw out runners. During batting practice, Berra became known as “Yogi” because a teammate mistook his cross-legged stance for that of a Hindu yogi.

When Berra was a young baseball player in 1942, he signed a contract with the New York Yankees of the American League (AL). He spent the years between 1943 and 1946 serving in the United States Navy during World War II after spending a season in the minor leagues. Before the 1946 season ended, he was promoted to the major league level with the New York Yankees. Since Berra’s catching was inconsistent at first, he spent most of his time in the outfield until 1949, when he finally settled into his role as the team’s regular catcher.

In his first World Series appearance, he hit a home run, and he went on to hit 20 or more home runs in each of the following seasons. Three times he was awarded the AL’s MVP award, an honor rarely given to catchers. Berra caught more games in the World Series than any other catcher, and he helped the Yankees win the championship in 1947. Plus, he belted 12 home runs in the World Series.

Ryan, sometimes known as the “Ryan Express,” pitched his sixth consecutive no-hitter in 1991. There was a record for the most consecutive games with 15 or more strikeouts in the major leagues that he held. Ryan left baseball in 1993 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1999. After 27 years in the major leagues, Ryan had a record of 324-292 with a 3.19 ERA, was eighth all-time in innings pitched (5,386), and was tied for seventh all-time in shutouts with Tom Seaver.

After hanging up his cleats, Ryan was still involved in baseball in many capacities, notably as a consultant for the Houston Astros and an owner of two minor league teams. He took over as president of the Texas Rangers in 2008. In 2010, a group including Ryan’s company bought the Rangers. He stepped down as president of the Rangers in 2013 after being promoted to chief executive officer (CEO) in 2011. Having sold his Rangers ownership part and resigned as CEO, he left his position at the conclusion of the 2013 season. In 2014, Ryan became an executive adviser for the Astros. He was instrumental in the 2017 World Series victory for the Houston Astros, however, he left the team in the wake of front-office instability in the offseason of the 2019 MLB season.

Hernández’s younger half-brother, Liván, also played baseball for Cuba’s national team as a pitcher before he defected to the United States in 1995. They thought Orlando would follow his brother’s example, so the Cuban authorities forbade him from ever playing baseball again. After escaping Cuba by sea on December 26, 1997, he signed with the New York Yankees and debuted in the major leagues the following year.

American professional baseball’s National League (NL) has been around longer than any other major league. The league began operations in 1876 under the name National League of Professional Baseball Clubs, succeeding the short-lived National Association of Professional Base Ball Players. Over the years, various competing leagues have attempted to unseat the MLB, beginning with the American Association in 1882–1891. Only the American League, founded in 1900, has endured to the present day.

Every year since 1903, the National and American League winners have met in the World Series to determine the MLB champion. There are 15 clubs in the National League, and they are split among three divisions. The National League East consists of the following teams: the New York Mets, the Philadelphia Phillies, Washington Nationals, and the Atlanta Braves. Teams from Chicago, Cincinnati, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, and St. Louis make up the National League Central. Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, and San Francisco Giants are the teams that make up the National League West.

Glavine spent his childhood in Massachusetts, where he developed a love for both ice hockey and baseball. While he was a senior in high school, he was recognized as the best hockey player in the Boston area. The Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League (NHL) picked him, and the University of Lowell in Massachusetts offered him a hockey scholarship. When the National League’s Atlanta Braves drafted him that year, he made the smart decision to pursue baseball rather than hockey since he knew it would provide him with a long career.
