Stephen Todd Alford is an American men’s collegiate basketball coach and a former professional basketball player. He is now the head coach for the Nevada Wolf Pack, which competes in the Mountain West Conference (MWC). Alford was born on November 23, 1964. He was a two-time consensus first-team All-American while playing college basketball for the Indiana Hoosiers. He was born and reared in the state of Indiana. After spending five and a half seasons with the UCLA Bruins, he was let go in the middle of the 2018–19 campaign. He became the fourth head coach in NCAA Division I history to bring five different schools to the tournament as he guided Nevada to a berth in the NCAA Tournament in 2023. After much deliberation, Alford decided to join Bob Knight and the Indiana Hoosiers in their pursuit of basketball glory. With 2,438 points scored during his stay at Indiana University Bloomington, he established himself as the school’s all-time top scorer. This record was eventually surpassed by Calbert Cheaney, who established himself as the school’s all-time leading scorer in the Big Ten. Alford was the only player ever to be honored as the team’s Most Valuable Player on four occasions.
Alford was named to the first team all-Big Ten for each of the last three seasons of his career. Alford was ranked number 35 on the list of the 100 best Division-I college basketball players compiled by The Sporting News and titled Legends of College Basketball.
