The National Football League’s New England Patriots are an American professional gridiron football team headquartered in Foxborough, Massachusetts (NFL). Six Super Bowls and eleven AFC titles belong to the Patriots.

In 1960, the team, then known as the Boston Patriots, joined the American Football League. They immediately produced a competitive team led by quarterback Vito Parilli, linebacker Nick Buoniconti, and wide receiver Gino Cappelletti.  Unfortunately, after finishing second in their division in 1966, the squad went on a seven-year losing streak. When finding a home stadium, the Patriots had just as much trouble as the rest of the NFL, moving around the Boston region four times in only ten years.

After the AFL and NFL merged in 1970, the team moved to Foxborough and changed its name to the New England Patriots the following year. The Patriots had some success in the 1970s and 1980s thanks to players like future Hall of Fame cornerback Mike Haynes, quarterback Steve Grogan, and the legendary offensive lineman John Hannah. In 1986, they made it to the big game for the first time, but they were crushed by the Chicago Bears, 46-10.

After an absence of eleven years, the Patriots eventually returned to the Super Bowl under the leadership of quarterback Drew Bledsoe and the guidance of head coach Bill Parcells. Despite the Patriots’ loss in Super Bowl XXXI to the Green Bay Packers, the Patriots made the playoffs for the first time in franchise history three years in a row.

When the Patriots hired Bill Belichick as head coach in 2000, it was one of the most pivotal moments in team history. Belichick, who had spent most of his coaching career as a defensive assistant, assembled a formidable team out of relatively unknown senior free agents and quick draught picks. Tom Brady, a virtually unknown sixth-round draught choice, took over the Patriots’ offense after Bledsoe’s devastating injury in 2001 and led the team to an unexpected Super Bowl victory the following February. The Patriots would win four more Super Bowls under Brady’s leadership.

After acquiring All-Pro wide receiver Randy Moss in a trade before the 2007 season, the Patriots set multiple offensive records. They went 16-0, the only perfect regular season in NFL history, before losing to the New York Giants, the heavy underdog, in Super Bowl XLII. Despite losing Moss in a trade during the 2010 season, the Patriots remained a high-scoring club thanks to a potent passing attack led by Tom Brady, Wes Welker, and Rob Gronkowski. In 2010 and 2011, New England finished with the best record in the AFC. After the 2011 season, the Patriots met the Giants in the Super Bowl again, but this time they were defeated.

The team’s great play carried over into the second decade, concluding with 12-4 records and trips to the AFC title game in the next two seasons. The Patriots continued their winning ways under Brady and Belichick in 2014, claiming the AFC East title with a 12–2 mark and advancing to Super Bowl XLIX for the sixth time in the duo’s tenure. The Patriots eventually prevailed over the Seattle Seahawks and won the Super Bowl.

In 2015, the Patriots reached the AFC Championship Game for the 12th time in the franchise’s history. However, they were ultimately defeated by the Denver Broncos. The following season, New England dominated the NFL by going 14-2 and winning another AFC title relatively easily. The Patriots won their seventh Super Bowl after returning from a 25-point deficit in overtime to beat the Atlanta Falcons.

The Patriots finished 13-3 last season, clinching their division for the second straight year and setting a franchise record with their 10th trip to the Super Bowl. There, they were defeated by the Philadelphia Eagles in a nail-biter, making New England the team with five Super Bowl defeats in NFL history. The Patriots’ machine kept rolling in 2018, as they won their division again by wide margins and secured the AFC’s second seed.

The Patriots advanced to their third consecutive Super Bowl after cruising to victory in the divisional round and then prevailing in a nail-biting AFC Championship Game against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Patriots’ 13-3 win over the Rams in the lowest-scoring Super Bowl ever gave them a record sixth championship, tying them with the Steelers for the most in NFL history. The Patriots won their 11th consecutive AFC East title in 2019, setting an NFL record; however, New England did not receive a first-round playoff bye for the first time in a decade and lost its playoff opener.

Brady, a fan of the San Francisco 49ers since he was a kid, saw his favorite, quarterback Joe Montana, play for the team frequently in the 1980s. Brady was a two-sport star in high school, dominating the football and baseball fields. The Montreal Expos selected him in the 1995 Major League Baseball draught, but he passed on professional baseball to play college football at the University of Michigan. Not starting until his junior year, Brady led Michigan to victory in the 1999 Orange Bowl and earned a reputation as a tenacious and cerebral player despite his lack of remarkable physical skills. The New England Patriots selected him in the sixth round of the NFL draught in 2000, and he spent his rookie year working hard to get stronger and more conditioned.

On November 16, 1959, a group of New England businessmen led by former public relations executive William H. “Billy” Sullivan, Jr. was awarded the eighth and final franchise in the new American Football League, marking the arrival of professional football to the region. After waiting a week, the franchise’s first draught pick was Northwestern Wildcats running back Ron Burton, and the franchise’s first territorial pick was Syracuse Orangemen running back Gerhardt Schwedes.

On November 22, 1959, Boston businessman Billy Sullivan Jr., who had extensive experience promoting sports events, was awarded a franchise in the American Football League. The Boston sportswriters who judged a contest to name the team ultimately settled on the moniker “Patriots” as a nod to the region’s rich history and tradition. In 1960, two significant “firsts” involved the Boston club. On July 30, the Patriots beat the Buffalo Bills in the first preseason game for the American Football League. At the inaugural American Football League regular season game on September 9, the Patriots fell to the Denver Broncos by a score of 13-10.

Finding a suitable playing home in the Boston area was almost as critical as putting together a competitive squad during the Patriots’ first decade. During the 1960s and ’61s, the Patriots played their home games at Boston University Field. The Patriots used Fenway Park, the home of the Boston Red Sox, as their home field from 1963 until 1969. Then in 1971, two significant events took place. The franchise rebranded as the New England Patriots and relocated to Foxboro, a town about 25 miles south of Boston, where their new stadium has seating for 60,764.

The Patriots were perennial AFL playoff candidates despite never having a properly functioning stadium. Starting in the middle of the 1961 season, Mike Holovak succeeded Lou Saban and finished with a 53-47-9 record. In 1963, the Patriots had his best season and won the AFL Eastern Division by beating the Buffalo Bills 26-8 in a playoff. Nonetheless, they lost 51-10 to San Diego the following week in the AFL title game. Gino Cappelletti, Holovak’s placekicker, and standout wide receiver set an American Football League record with 1,100 points, 252 of which were from touchdown receptions. Jim Nance, an AFL running back, set an AFL record with 1,458 yards rushing in 1966 and 1,216 yards rushing in 1967.

After a few lost seasons following the AFL-NFL merger, the Patriots finally emerged as legitimate title contenders in the latter part of the 1970s. The 1976 Patriots went 11-3 and were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the eventual-champion Oakland Raiders. In 1978, they triumphed as AFC Eastern champions, while in 1979, they finished a close second. After Raymond Berry came over as head coach in 1984, the Patriots went 51-41-0 throughout his tenure. In 1985, Berry led his club to an 11-5 record, a wild-card playoff berth, and the AFC championship game, where the Chicago Bears defeated them. In 1991, guard John Hannah became the first Patriot to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and he didn’t play another down that day.

Sullivan sold the Patriots in 1988 to Victor K. Kiam II, then in 1992 to James B. Orthwein, and lastly in 1994 to Robert Kraft. In 1996, the Patriots won the AFC Championship. They advanced to their second Super Bowl under the leadership of highly regarded veteran coach Bill Parcells and the strategic acquisition of talented players via the NFL draught.

However, after starting the 2001 season 5-5, the Patriots completed a miracle season under new head coach Bill Belichick and unexpected star quarterback Tom Brady, winning Super Bowl XXXVI. New England now has a modern dynasty thanks to Belichick and Brady. They have taken the Patriots to the Super Bowl six times, where they have gone four for four. Recent examples include the 2014 season’s Super Bowl XLIX.

When Drew Bledsoe, the Patriots’ starting quarterback, got hurt in game two of the 2001 season, Tom Brady was called into action. His performance was unremarkable, but he was reliable, making the right plays regularly and avoiding significant blunders. Brady led the Patriots to an 11-3 regular season record and a victory over the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI, where he was awarded the game’s most valuable player. During Brady’s first three seasons with the Patriots, the team went 40-12, making them one of the best in the NFL.

They beat the Carolina Panthers this time, and Brady won his second Super Bowl MVP honor. The following season, the Patriots continued their winning, setting a new record of 21 straight victories to surpass the previous mark of 18 established by the 1972–1973 Miami Dolphins. This was Brady and the Patriots third Super Bowl victory in the last four years, and they won it against the Eagles.
