Ivers Whitney Adams started the team in 1871 as one of nine founding members of the National Association of Professional Baseball Players, the precursor to the National League. The team was formerly known as the Boston Red Stockings. After media mogul Ted Turner bought the Braves in 1976, his cable “superstation,” WTCG, began broadcasting every game nationally (WTBS, or TBS, from 1979). Despite the fact that TBS’s extensive coverage of the recently poor team with a mostly regional appeal was widely panned as unnecessary and overly biassed, the Braves’ national profile was nonetheless raised by the broadcasts, and they eventually became one of the more popular teams in the country.

In 2012, the Braves finally made it back to the playoffs, although they were soon ousted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the newly instituted one-game Wild Card playoff game. Even though the 2013 season marked the Braves’ first division championship in eight years, they were once again swept from the playoffs in the first round.
After another disastrous year in which the Braves failed to make the playoffs, the team began a rebuilding process that resulted in the franchise’s worst record in 25 years in 2015. After losing 90 games in 2017, Atlanta turned things around in 2018 by winning 90 games and making the playoffs earlier than many baseball experts had predicted, albeit losing their first playoff series in four games. In 2019, the young Braves roster continued to grow, winning 97 games and claiming another division title before falling in the playoffs for the second consecutive year.
In 2020, Atlanta made it back to the NLCS, but they lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games after blowing a 3-1 series lead. The next year, the Braves got even with the Dodgers by winning the National League Championship Series (NLCS) in six games. This was the team’s first trip to the World Series in 22 years. Following that, Atlanta won their fourth championship by sweeping the Houston Astros in a best-of-seven series.
Mathews spent most of his childhood in Santa Barbara. He was a two-sport star in high school, and on the night of his graduation in 1949, he signed with the Boston Braves of Major League Baseball. In 1952, as a rookie for Boston, he hit 25 home runs; the next year, in Milwaukee, he blasted 47, winning the National League home run title. When Sports Illustrated first hit newsstands in August 1954, it was with Mathews on the cover.
Mathews’s game-winning home run in the bottom of the 10th inning of game four against the New York Yankees sealed Milwaukee’s 1957 World Series victory. To top it all off, he scored Milwaukee’s winning run in game five. Mathews played an important role on both sides of the ball in the decisive game, helping his team offensively with a two-run double and then defensively by making a backhanded stop of a hard grounder to prevent a comeback by the Yankees in the ninth inning. In 1958, the Braves made another trip to the World Series, but this time they were swept by the Yankees in seven games.
In 1959, left-handed bat and all-star Mathews led the league with 46 home runs, earning him the second home run crown of his career. For nine consecutive seasons, he hit at least 30 home runs. Before joining the Houston Astros for the 1967 season, Mathews played for the Atlanta Braves after they relocated there in 1966. On July 14, 1967, he became one of a select few major leaguers to hit 500 home runs, and he concluded his career with a total of 512. When the Detroit Tigers won the World Series in 1968, it was Mathews’ final season as a player, and he got another championship ring.
Mathews was recruited as the Brave’s manager in the latter half of 1972; he finished with a 149-161 record and was let go sometime in 1974. When Aaron hit a home run of 715, breaking Babe Ruth’s record, he was the manager at the time. Mathews then became a scout and batting instructor for several different teams.

He played 57 games for the Yankees in 1990, hitting.158, before being released and later signed by the Atlanta Braves. The fast outfielder batted.304 with a league-high 14 triples in 1992, the best season of his baseball career. He also helped the Braves win the World Series (a six-game loss to the Toronto Blue Jays). Two different teams ended up with him after trades in 1994 and 1995: the Cincinnati Reds and the San Francisco Giants. Sanders did not play in 1996, but returned for one season with the Reds in 1997 and again in 2001 before calling it quits.
