Luigi P. Carnesecca, born in the United States on January 5, 1925, is a former collegiate basketball coach who previously worked at St. John’s University. Additionally, Carnesecca coached professionally, serving as the head coach of the New York Nets of the American Basketball Association for three seasons. In 1992, Carnesecca was honored with induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Throughout 24 seasons (1965–1970, 1973–1992), he led the St. John’s men’s basketball team to 526 wins and 200 defeats. The flamboyant “Looie,” as he was affectionately nicknamed by fans and the media, led the team to the postseason in every season he coached, including a run to the Final Four in 1985. In 1983 and 1985, the United States Basketball Writers Association honored him by bestowing him the National Coach of the Year title.
Carnesecca is well-known for his wry sense of humor and the sweaters that have become his trademark. The historically significant Alumni Hall at St. John’s University was formally dedicated and renamed Carnesecca Arena in November 2004. After receiving his diploma, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and served for the next three years during World War II. He was stationed aboard a troop carrier in the Pacific theater during that time. After completing his service in the Coast Guard, he enrolled at St. John’s University and received his degree in 1950. In addition to that, he was a coach at the high school he had attended, St. Ann’s, until Jack Curran replaced him.
Carnesecca moved to the professional ranks shortly after starting his coaching career at St. John’s in 1965. Between 1970 and 1973, he served the New York Nets of the American Basketball Association as its head coach and general manager for three seasons. During the three seasons that Carnesecca was the baseball team’s manager, the club earned a berth in the playoffs in each of those seasons.
The 1971–1972 Nets finished third in the regular season but advanced to the ABA Finals, where the Indiana Pacers ultimately eliminated them in the 1972–1973 season; the Nets defeated the Memphis Tams to claim fourth place in the Eastern Division and the last playoff slot. This was accomplished despite the Nets having a record of 30–53.
On March 27, 1973, Carnesecca announced that he would return to St. John’s. He took over for Frank Mulzoff, his successor from three years earlier, who had stepped down after a 19–7 campaign and was succeeded by him. He had two years left out of five on the deal he had with the Nets, and he was scheduled to get around $200,000 spread out over seven years.

Because his compensation at St. John’s was $22,000 per year, he incurred a financial loss due to the move. He said, “I’ve tried my hand at pro ball, and I’m very pleased with it.” However, when the chance presented for me to return to St. John’s, I jumped at the event.

After discovering that Thompson had passed away on Monday at 78, Carnesecca told The Post that Thompson was “really a legend, a giant of a coach.” When he talked, people listened to what he had to say. His presence and leadership will be deeply missed, particularly at Georgetown and across the Big East.
He was a guy of enormous height who, by the way, carried himself and directed his program, had a significant impact on a large number of coaches as well as African-Americans who were entering the industry. He never used any malicious code in his programs, which he had done for Georgetown, which had previously had a favorable reputation, but which he elevated to an even higher level.
