John Paul Loviglio is an American former professional baseball second baseman who played for the Philadelphia Phillies (1980), the Chicago White Sox (1981–82), and the Chicago Cubs (1983). Loviglio was born on May 30, 1956, and is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. After retiring from playing, he had a successful career as a coach and manager in the lower leagues. Loviglio evaluated Randall during that year when he was in the middle of a lengthy career spent assessing talent in the minors. This was after Loviglio’s playing career had taken him to the majors for four seasons.
After playing in 46 big league games, he went on to have a career as a coach and manager in the minor leagues that stretched a quarter of a century. After graduating from Suffolk County Community College and being signed as a free agent by the Phillies in 1977, Loviglio started his career as a baseball player. Loviglio first joined the Phillies organization. He played for the single-A Spartanburg and short-season Auburn teams.
