George Wyner

George Wyner born October 20, 1945, is an American actor who has appeared in films and on television. Hill Street Blues, in which he played ADA Bernstein, is possibly his most well-known portrayal to this day.

George, a native of Boston and a graduate of Syracuse University has worked widely in television and movies since his debut in 1972. Rabbi in the Coen Brothers’ best-picture candidate A Serious Man (2009), was nominated for an Academy Award. In the entertainment industry, there are some names that one can’t help but believe are a little tragic simply because of the way they are pronounced.

George Wyner is one of those persons, and one can only imagine the kinds of jokes that have been made about him throughout the years because of his last name, which is Wyner. If he was able to find a method to turn the tables on his peers, that is admirable; nonetheless, the reality remains that children and even adults may be painfully cruel if they believe that they would get away with it.

However, it appears that this did not deter him from pursuing a career in acting, as he has been extremely visible on television and has completed a number of film roles, some of which have been highly visible throughout the years and have earned him a great deal of respect from those who have enjoyed his performances.

Being accused of being forgotten or overlooked isn’t fully accurate because he’s been around long enough that people have likely seen him in a dozen different projects and will certainly remember him from just as many.

Having established his mark in the industry, he’s been able to come up with a couple of memorable characters that people may be able to quote because he’s been more than a little noticeable throughout the years as a supporting actor and extra who can speak up and be heard fairly easily. He may play the role of a jerk at times, and at other times he can play the role of someone who is well-intentioned but comes across as a little weak.

In one of those latter parts, Wyner plays the mayor of a small town who, upon learning of the existence of a lone postman delivering letters, begins to have hope that things might be turning around. The film The Postman, starring Kevin Costner, has been widely panned, and Wyner’s performance in it has been particularly harsh.

Unfortunately, the deceit only serves to enrage the Holnists, a militaristic group of persons who had been harassing people for years at that point and who didn’t appreciate being informed that they couldn’t take what they needed from them.

Of course, the Holnists’ most serious flaw was their ability to back up their dissatisfaction with violence when the situation called for it, and Wyner’s character and those he led suffered when the titular character rolled through their town delivering hope, only to be captured by the Holnists while the mayor’s town was razed and he and his people were slaughtered. That was one example of his work, as was his appearance in Mel Brooks’ Spaceballs (1987) as Colonel Sandurz, and his To Be or Not to Be (1997) as a character (1983).

His cinematic credits include the classics Fletch (1985) and Fletch Lives (1989), the drama The Devil’s Advocate (1997), and Trouble with the Curve (1998), among many others (2012). George has appeared as a guest star on more than 150 television episodes and has been a series regular on nine of them. Hill Street Blues, on which he starred as Deputy D.A. Irwin Bernstein for six seasons, is possibly his most well-known role (1981).
