Eddie George

Edward Alan John George, Baron George, of St. Tudy in the County of Cornwall, better known by his moniker “Steady Eddie,” was a prominent British banker and economist. On September 11th, 1938, he was born in Carshalton, Surrey, a suburb of London; he passed away on April 18th, 2009, in St. Tudy, Cornwall. Eddie George served as the Bank of England governor from 1993 to 2003, when the BOE became autonomous.

After earning his economics degree from Cambridge’s Emmanuel College, George served in the Royal Air Force. He began working for the Bank of England in 1962, primarily in the international department. The middle 1960s found him at the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), and the early 1970s saw him at the IMF (IMF). The Bank of England promoted George to executive director in 1982. He was promoted to the role of deputy governor in 1990.

When George was the deputy governor in 1991, he came under fire for his alleged complicity in the collapse of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International. According to an official review, there were some problems with the Bank of England’s monitoring and communication systems. After the UK withdrew from the European Communities’ exchange-rate system in September 1992, George was able to redeem himself by skillfully handling the embarrassing scenario that ensued.

Despite the political disaster the withdrawal—which amounted to a forced devaluation of the pound sterling—caused for the Conservative administration, George handled the technical aspects of the situation with aplomb. By orchestrating the retreat, George effectively devalued the British pound. He was given a promotion to the governor of the Bank of England in July 1993. During his tenure, he made the most of every occasion to emphasize his firm conviction that high-interest rates were necessary to keep inflation under control and the British economy snowballing.

Unlike his predecessors, George was not afraid to air his disagreements with the British chancellor of the exchequer, Kenneth Clarke, or discuss the economy in general. George was franker in public pronouncements than his predecessors because he was determined to preserve his office. In 1995, the Conservative administration decided to publish the minutes of George’s monthly meetings with Clarke, and the results revealed considerable disagreement about interest rates.

George acknowledged that Clarke was right to overrule him and maintain interest rates low at the end of 1995 when it became clear that the economy was beginning to slow down. Even after suffering a temporary setback, George worked toward achieving complete independence for the Bank of England in the mould of Germany’s Bundesbank, which he finally did in 1997.

Scholars from Oxford fled to Cambridge during the “town and gown” unrest in 1209, when the university was often believed to have been founded (townspeople versus scholars). After city officials decided to take safeguards against the risk of disruption in Cambridge, only students under a teacher’s control were allowed to remain in the city. Bishop Hugo de Balsham of Ely founded Peterhouse in 1284 as an imitation of Oxford University. The urge to give the kids a nice, neat place to live was a driving factor. Over the next three decades, fifteen more colleges were founded, and in 1318, Pope John XXII recognized Cambridge as a studium generale.

When the first chair at Cambridge University was created in 1502, the city of Cambridge was hardly noteworthy. It was intended that this seat be used for the study of religion. In 1511, Desiderius Erasmus arrived at Cambridge, where he would play a pivotal role in disseminating Renaissance-era scholarship.

After receiving new statutes from Elizabeth I in 1570, the university was formally founded by an act of Parliament the following year, in 1571. College presidents were made responsible for running their respective schools under the new regulations, which remained in force for nearly three centuries. Non-college affiliated students were no longer given any consideration for enrollment at the institution.

In 1663, a former student named Lucas Lucas left the university enough money to endow a chair in mathematics called the Lucasian chair. Six years after the inaugural professor retired, Isaac Newton, then a young fellow at Trinity, was chosen to succeed him. More than 30 years into his chair, Newton had already set a precedent for mathematics at the university. When it was first created in the 18th century, the honors exam mainly consisted of mathematical questions.  The first tripos was established in 1824 for classical studies, and by 1851 there was another tripos for science and ethics.

The university established the Cavendish chair in experimental physics in 1871, the same year that work began at the Cavendish Laboratory. James Clerk Maxwell, the second wrangler in 1854, was the first professor at the school. He set a standard for academic leadership in physics that J.J. Thomson and Ernest Rutherford followed. The groups led by Max Ferdinand Perutz and John Cowdery Kendrew and Francis Crick and James Watson, respectively, discovered the structures of proteins and the double helix of DNA, providing the framework for the formation of the modern scientific subject of molecular biology.

Sir Frederick Gowland Hopkins, more than perhaps any other man, can be considered the father of biochemistry for his groundbreaking research in the field. To cite an example: [Citation needed] The naturalist Charles Darwin, the economist John Maynard Keynes, and the historian G.M. Trevelyan are just a few of the well-known Cambridge graduates who made significant contributions to their respective fields.

Several campus buildings have deep roots in the institution’s past. The King’s College Chapel, founded in 1446, is one of the most beautiful buildings in Britain. The mulberry tree that is supposed to have inspired John Milton to write Lycidas can be found on the Christ’s College campus.
