Earl Edwards Jr. has played very well in goal, even though no one anticipated him to be the starting goalkeeper for the first two games of the 2022 season. On Saturday afternoon, Edwards Jr. kept a clean sheet for the first time in his Major League Soccer career, helping New England win its first match at Gillette Stadium. I’m excited,” the goalie stated after the game as he walked off the field. “I wanted to go get my daughter because this is very much so who I do it for, and that is my kids and my family,” she said. “I do it for them.”

That we were able to achieve a shutout and have Bruce break the record simultaneously was a significant moment. However, the fact that Edwards Jr. completed the game with only one save conveys part of the tale. He produced several incredible stops, especially against the Portland Timbers, which allowed New England to salvage a point on their road trip out west. Additionally, Saturday became the goalie’s first victory since 2018.

The player was selected in the third round of the MLS SuperDraft in 2015 and played for Orlando’s USL squad for much of the 2017 season, appearing in 23 games. Edwards nevertheless managed to finish in the top 10 in saves, top five in clean sheets, and with a 75% save success rate and 1.13 goals against average, even though he missed nine of the last 11 games after being called up to the MLS squad.

Edwards, who has been with the Lions since 2015, acquired his first complete season of professional experience by playing in all of the team’s games for the first time. Waiting his turn and picking up valuable lessons from more seasoned players throughout his first two years with Orlando, he was the backup goalkeeper for both Tally Hall and Joe Bendik. In 2017, he acted as a testing ground for Edwards, during which he took the league by storm.

The goalkeeper had a sluggish beginning to the season, but he enabled the OCB team to run 12 games without suffering a loss, during which they had six clean sheets. Edwards was also honored to be awarded the August USL Player of the Month. During that month, he played in five games and had three shutouts while saving 88% of the shots that he faced. For the Major League Soccer team, Edwards had appeared sporadically in U.S. Open Cup matches and friendlies in 2015 and 2016 until eventually participating in a league match during the last game of the season in Philadelphia.
