His parents, Bettye and Donald Frank Cheadle Sr. were both born and reared in the United States, and he was raised in Kansas City, Missouri, where he was born on November 29, 1964. In addition to his father being a clinical psychologist, his mother also worked as a teacher and his grandfather as a clinical psychologist. Moving Violations, a 1985 comedy film that made his feature film debut as a starring actor, was his first film as a leading actor.
