Robert Curtis McElhinney is a Canadian goalkeeper who used to compete professionally in ice hockey. He was born on May 23, 1983. He began his professional career with the Calgary Flames. He went on to play for the Anaheim Ducks, Ottawa Senators, Phoenix Coyotes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Toronto Maple Leafs, Carolina Hurricanes, and Tampa Bay Lightning throughout his time in the National Hockey League. The Flames selected McElhinney in the sixth round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. He went on to play with the Lightning and win the Stanley Cup in both 2020 and 2021.
McElhinney participated in college hockey for four years at Colorado College, during which time he compiled a record of 62–15–8. This led to his selection to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association First All-Star Team in 2003 and 2005 and to the NCAA Second and First All-American Teams in 2003 and 2005, respectively. McElhinney also won two Western Collegiate Hockey Association First All-Star Team awards. In the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, the Calgary Flames chose him in the 176th spot overall to take on their roster.

McElhinney played for both the Quad City and the Calgary Flames during the 2007–2008 season. In relief of Miikka Kiprusoff, he first appeared in the National Hockey League on October 22, 2007, against the San Jose Sharks. He played in five NHL games, ending with a record of 0-2-0 and a goals-against average of 2.00. His first victory in the NHL came in his 14th game of the year, which was also the last game of the regular season, a 4–1 triumph against the Edmonton Oilers on April 11, 2009. He spent the whole 2008–09 NHL season with Calgary as Kiprusoff’s backup and played all 82 games with the Flames.
Before the 2009–10 campaign started, the Flames committed to McElhinney on a deal that would last for two years.
