Broadcast Music, Inc. bestowed upon Anderson the “Country Music Songwriting Icon” title in 2002, making him the first person in the genre’s history to receive the honor. At the time, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, and James Brown were the only other recipients of such a high honor. In 2008, he was presented with the Academy of Country Music’s very first Poets Award as a token of their appreciation. In 2018, he was elected to the all-genre Songwriters Hall of Fame.

He became just the second recipient of the Kris Kristofferson Lifetime Achievement Award from the Nashville Songwriters’ Association. The Nashville Songwriters’ Association presented both of these honors. Willie Nelson was the first recipient of the award in the year 2012. His name may be found with those of other renowned composers, including George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Bob Dylan, and Hank Williams.
