After finishing high school, Al enrolled at the University of Oswego to study visual communication. At the same time, he enrolled in meteorology courses to fulfill the university’s science requirement and found that he enjoyed learning about weather. When veteran weathercaster Dr. Frank Field departed the network in August 1984, he was promoted from his position as the weekend weather anchor at WNBC-TV to that of the evening weathercaster. He started giving weekly weather reports in 1985. Soon he was filling in often for Joe Witte on NBC’s Sunrise newscast.
