He has a casual demeanor when forecasting the weather and often recommends that New Yorkers take the day off when the sun is shining. His behavior shifts when he’s following hurricanes or other catastrophic weather phenomena, demonstrating his command of meteorology on a national and regional scale.

Despite coming from a working-class family, he decided to pursue meteorology in college and eventually became a weathercaster. After finishing college, he decided to pursue a profession in communication and immediately gained recognition from the American Meteorological Society for his high level of accuracy in forecasting. He has been working as NBC’s ‘Today Show’ weather anchor ever since the show’s debut in 1996.

When veteran weathercaster Dr. Frank Field departed the network in August 1984, he was promoted from his position as the weekend weather anchor at WNBC-TV to that of the evening weathercaster. He started giving weekly weather reports in 1985. Soon he was filling in often for Joe Witte on NBC’s Sunrise newscast. Aside from that, he covered for more seasoned forecasters like his hero Willard Scott, Bryant Gumbel, and Matt Lauer.

In 1994, he began a multimedia firm named “Al Roker Entertainment Inc,” which offered a wide range of creative services in addition to his longtime career as a weather forecaster. It has since created countless broadcast, cable, digital, and online television shows. In 1995, he took up hosting duties for NBC’s annual ‘Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade broadcast. By the end of that year, he had taken up weekend hosting duties on CNBC’s The Al Roker Show. He then hosted Remember This?, a game program on MSNBC, beginning the following year.

When Willard Scott left the ‘Today Show’ in the early ’90s, Al Roker was already well on his way to becoming his successor. Roker took over Scott’s regular weekday weather spot on January 26, 1996, and has been there ever since. Soon after, he began conducting interviews with passers-by outdoors, allowing people to appear on video.

When he walked outside to photograph it, a strong wind knocked him off his feet, but he recovered.

He presented the 2008 season of Celebrity Family Feud on NBC. His latter career included hosting game programs, including Game On TODAY (2016). Meanwhile, he co-hosted Today’s Take from November 12, 2012, till September 22, 2017, and then 3rd Hour Today in 2018. But forecasting the weather is still his foremost priority.

From 2009 to 2015, the show could be seen on television. Since the 1990s, he has also made several guest appearances on television.
