Ray Perry, a performer and the owner of radio station KNGS, and his wife Mary Perry welcomed their son Steve into the world. Because his family was of Portuguese origin, he was able to become bilingual (Portuguese and English) rather quickly. After he had been in the world for only a few years, his parents separated, and he went to live with his mother and his grandparents. When his mother first met and married Marv, he was only 14 years old. Marv was a very supportive individual who encouraged him to continue pursuing his interest in music.

After moving to Lemoore, California with his family, he enrolled in the high school there and was an active member of the marching band at his school, in addition to participating in other bands. When he first heard Sam Cooke on the radio, he was a small child at the time. It was Cooke’s song “Cupid” that served as the impetus for him to pursue singing as a full-time profession. In the early stages of his career, he pursued his interest in music by participating in musical ensembles alongside friends who shared similar interests and by presenting concerts as a member of a local barbershop quartet. The most satisfying of all of them was playing in “The Sullies,” a band in which he also sang and played the drums. It bested eighty other bands at the battle of the bands held at Calaveras and took first place.

He went to college at College of the Sequoias in Visalia, California, and was the first tenor in the school’s choir when he was there. Even though he did not finish his official schooling, the musician that was born inside of him was more prominent than any of his other qualities. In the early years of his twenties, he relocated to Sacramento, where he formed the band Ice together with Scott Matthews, then 16 years old (now a famous American musician). However, very quickly after that, it was dissolved because there was insufficient oversight and poor management.

It was in 1977 that he and Craig Krampf established the band that would later be known as “Alien Project.” Immediately following their debut performance, the band was offered recording contracts by Chrysalis and Columbia Records. On July 4 of that year, sadly, Richard Michaels, the band’s bassist, passed away in a car accident. The incident occurred in the same year. As a direct consequence of this unfortunate occurrence, he went back to Lemoore and made the decision not to pursue a career in singing any further. On the other hand, the backing and encouragement he received from his mother convinced him to keep going.

He was fortunate enough to receive a call from Walter “Herbie” Herbert, the manager of a band located in San Francisco called “Journey,” who had discovered his Alien Project demo tape and decided to contact him. In San Francisco on October 28, 1977, he made his first appearance in public with the play “Journey.” The band quickly transitioned to popular rock with Perry on their side and published their debut album with him, titled “Infinity,” which resulted in a significant rise in album sales. It includes his self-composed song “Lights,” which shot straight to the top of the charts after its release.

1979 saw the release of the album titled “evolution,” and it too became a great seller. This album featured one of Journey’s first top 20 successes, titled “Loving, touching, squeezing.” The next year saw the publication of the album ‘Escape,’ which included several hit singles such as ‘Don’t stop believing.’ More than seven million copies were distributed, making it the band’s most successful album to date. Frontiers was released in 1983 and quickly became one of the most successful albums of its day. During the same year, the band “Journey” went on a lengthy tour to raise money for their albums. After this, Perry released his first solo album titled “Street talk.” This album had his first greatest hit as a solo artist titled “Oh Sherrie,” which was written for his girlfriend at the time, Sherrie Swafford.

In 1986, he parted ways with the band ‘Journey’ informally after a string of bad occurrences forced him to do so. After that, he removed himself from the music business for a period of seven years. In 1996, he got back together with the band Journey to record their reunion album, which was titled “Trial by Fire.” The album was a big hit, and it peaked at number three on the billboard album list. However, because of an injury to his hip, he was unable to continue playing with the band any longer. 1998 saw the publication of his solo compilation album titled “best hits + 5 unreleased.” The CD featured an original Alien Project demo as one of its tracks. In 2005, he collaborated with David Pack, the lead vocalist for ‘Ambrosia, on a number of occasions to perform covers and background vocals.

The year 1984 marked the release of his debut solo album, titled “Street Talk,” which went on to become his most successful release to date as a solo artist. In addition to that, it featured the song “Oh Sherrie,” which he had written just for his girlfriend at the time, Sherrie Swafford (who also appeared in the music video). The song climbed all the way to the top of the rock charts in the United States and was played extensively on MTV. On 1985, he participated as one of 21 singers in the charity single titled “We are the globe,” which was recorded by the super group known as “USA for Africa.” It earned him a great deal of respect and appreciation from his devoted following across the United States. In 1998, he contributed a number of songs that were recorded for the soundtrack of the Warner Bros. film “Quest for Camelot.” Currently, it is included on the soundtrack for motion pictures.

His two solo albums, ‘Street Talk’ and ‘for the love of weird medicine,’ as well as his greatest hits CD, were both restored and reissued in 2006. A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was bestowed upon his band “Journey” in recognition of their recording efforts at 6750 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California. Rolling Stones magazine ranked him as one of the greatest 100 vocalists in all of music, and he was one of the names on that list. It was really painful for him because his romantic relationship with his girlfriend, Sherri Swafford, did not turn out the way he had hoped it would. The anguish he felt after their relationship ended may be heard in several of his pieces. In 1985, on December 4th, his mother Mary passed away as a result of complications from a severe neurological condition that had been detected in her.

Her premature passing had a significant impact on both him and his profession. His music video for the song “Foolish heart,” which was released in 1984, does not have a single editorial cut. He has demonstrated a considerable amount of interest in dairy farming as well as cattle farming, including an interest in the bovine insemination business in the Central valley of California. His father, Raymond F. Perry, was born Raymond Pereira, and his mother, Mary C. Quaresma, is of Portuguese descent. Steve Perry is their only child (Pico island, Azores). Because Steve’s father was a musician and vocalist, Steve developed an early appreciation for music. Additionally, he cites Sam Cooke and Al Jolson as two of his early musical influences. The Perry family had a strong bond up until Ray moved out when Steve was seven years old.

His mother did end up remarrying, but Steve has a very strong relationship with his stepfather’s new wife. Mary bought Steve a gold eighth note necklace for his twelve year old birthday and gave it to him as a good luck charm; he still wears it now. During Steve’s teenage years, his family made the move to a new home in Lemoore, California. While living in Lemoore, the young singer with the long hair continued to indulge his passion for music in whatever way he could. He went to that particular high school and participated in the marching band in addition to playing drums in extracurricular bands. After graduating high school, he enrolled in College of the Sequoias in Visalia, California for a brief period of time. While there, he sang the role of first tenor in the college choir. During this time period, Steve’s mother supported and encouraged his development as a musician.

Midway through his twenties, Steve Perry uprooted his life and travelled to Los Angeles, where he became the frontman for the band Alien Project. When the band’s bassist, Richard Michaels, was killed in a terrible vehicle accident, he was so devastated that he almost gave up music altogether. After experiencing a great deal of heartache, Steve went back to Lemoore and made the decision to abandon his profession as a singer. Instead, he chose to train in the construction industry like his stepfather and even spent some time working on a turkey farm. However, at the insistence of his mother, Steve picked up the phone and spoke with Walter “Herbie” Herbert, the manager of the band Journey, which was having a hard time performing in San Francisco. After listening to a tape of an Alien Project song titled “If You Need Me, Call Me,” Herbert was certain that Journey needed to get the young singer on board. During a sound check in Long Beach, Steve participated in the tour with Journey and sang one of their songs with the band. That evening, Herbert broke the news to the band that there would be a change in the lineup.
