Rick Ross text

American rapper and record label mogul William Leonard Roberts II, better known by his stage name Rick Ross, was born on February 14, 1977. He co-founded the influential Maybach Music Group with artists including Wale, Meek Mill, and French Montana, and has recorded six studio albums to date.  He left school to follow his passion and become a famous rap singer, but he also became involved in the drug-selling business, reflecting the environment in which he was raised.

Ross worked as a correctional officer for a number of years before obtaining his first record deal, a fact that has been used against him frequently in the media as a punchline because of his past drug dealing. With the success of his debut commercial single, “Hustlin,” he was able to secure a record deal with Jay-Def Z’s Records and become a household name. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with a number of other notable rap and R&B musicians.

While his parents were from Mississippi, Ross spent his childhood in the poor communities just north of Miami. Since his early years, Ross has been captivated by gangsta rap and hip hop, particularly the work of the Notorious B.I.G., Luther Campbell, and others. He attended Albany State University in Georgia on a football scholarship, but after a year he had completely lost interest in the sport and focused instead on creating rap lyrics and making money through drug dealing.

Ross was offered a recording contract with Suave House Records first, but he ultimately decided to sign with Slip-n-Slide Records. This opened the door for him to perform on tour and in the studio with Trick Daddy, resulting in a spot on two of their albums. ‘Justin,’ Ross’s debut single, had the intriguingly repeating line “Every day I’m Hustling” throughout the song and became a big hit, earning gold certification and making Ross the hottest new rap artist on the street.

In response to his breakthrough, several musicians began competing with one another to sign him to their record labels. The winning bidder was Def Records, which was founded and is currently run by legendary rap musician Jay-Z. They offered Ross a lucrative recording contract at the time. Ross’s first studio album, 2006’s “Port of Miami,” peaked at number one on the US Billboard 200. As a result of its success, the Recording Industry Association of America certified it as gold. The album featured the Top 40 singles “Push It,” “Holla at Me,” etc.

His subsequent 2008 album, titled “Trilla,” was his follow-up to the previous one. Ross titled it “Thriller” in honour of Michael Jackson, whose work he admired. The album also reached #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart. Ross, flush with his newfound fame, began performing live more regularly. As time went on, he began working with other famous rappers, such as Jay-Z, R. Kelly, Flo-Rida, Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy, etc., on songs and performances. Deeper Than Rap, his third studio album, was out in 2009 on his own label, Maybach Music Group, while distribution was handled by Def Recordings. In its first week of release in the United States, it sold 158,000 copies.

His fourth studio album, Teflon Don, was released the following year and contained collaborations with Ne-Yo, Kanye West, etc. including the hits “Super High” and “Live Fast, Die Young.” The song reached the second spot on the charts. In the same year, he got a management deal with Diddy through his company Ciroc Entertainment and the two began working together on an EP. From the EP, they unveiled the track “Another One.” Ross is best recognized for his role as a founding member of Maybach Music Group, which features notable rappers like Wale, French Montana, etc., in addition to his rapping career and his signature debut track “Hustlin,” to which the whole globe once grooved.

A platinum introduction to a uniquely larger-than-life character with gruffly delivered tales about the spoils and pitfalls of drug trafficking, “Hustlin'” (2006) by Rick Ross brought Miami back into rap’s national spotlight at a time when artists in Atlanta and Houston were establishing those cities as Southern strongholds. The MC rose to fame as an unexpected pop icon as well as a hip-hop mainstay. With the help of high-rolling, RIAA-certified singles like “The Boss” and “Aston Martin Music,” Ross has had a string of chart-topping albums since his debut, Port of Miami, in 2003.

William Roberts grew up in Carol City, Florida, a poor northern suburb of Miami. He was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi. Roberts started rapping in the mid-’90s after being influenced by musicians like Luther Campbell and the Notorious B.I.G. and soon after founded a local group called the Carol City Cartel. Roberts, who goes by the stage name “Freeway” Rick Ross in tribute to the notorious Los Angeles drug lord, spent some time on the Suave House Records label in Houston. Rapper Rick Ross rose to prominence in his home region during the early to mid-2000s thanks to his involvement in several Slip-N-Slide recordings as a guest star and his tour support for Trick Daddy.

Bidding wars broke out between Bad Boy CEO Sean “Diddy” Combs and the Inc (previously Murder Inc.) president Irv Gotti after both executives heard “Hustlin’,” Ross’ Runners-produced debut as a lead artist. Despite this, renowned rapper and president of Def Jam Jay-Z signed Ross to a multimillion-dollar contract. With support from Def Jam, the Miami song “Hustlin'” was given a fresh lease on life. In June of 2006, it became gold and peaked at number seven on the R&B/hip-hop charts; in August, the same month Ross released Port of Miami, the highest-charting album debut of all time on the Billboard 200, it went platinum.

Ross maintained a firm grasp on the decade of the 2010s. In the early half of the decade, he came close to topping the Billboard 200 with 2010’s Teflon Don, but he eventually did it with 2012’s God Forgives, I Don’t, and 2014’s Mastermind. Aside from that, he was recognized with his first Grammy nominations. Another Khaled single, “I’m on One,” was nominated for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration, while God Forgives itself was later nominated for Best Rap Album.

In the years between 2015 and 2019, Ross only had one more lead song reach the R&B/hip-hop Top Ten, and it was for Suicide Squad: The Album and featured a collaboration with Skrillex for Best Song Written for Visual Media Grammy consideration. The most successful of the singles on which Ross appeared was Khaled’s “Do You Mind,” but Ross’s own albums continued to sell well regardless. Ross joined Epic after his 2015 No. 6 smash “Black Market” was the last release from his time at Def Jam, reuniting him (temporarily) with Def Jam executive L.A. Reid.

Ross’s new era began in 2017 with the release of the #3 album, Rather You Than Me. The sequel, Port of Miami 2, debuted in 2019. The follow-up to his breakthrough album kept up his career’s unbroken run of Top Ten albums, and it was also his most introspective recording to date, dealing with the loss of his longtime collaborator and manager Black Bo, and his own health scare that had occurred the previous year. “Gold Roses,” in which Drake appears, was nominated for a Grammy in 2020 for Best Rap Song.

Ross released a number of songs that year, including “Entanglement” with August Alsina and “Pinned to the Cross” with Finn Matthews, both of which featured collaborations. ‘Outlawz,’ featuring 21 Savage, was the first single from Ross’s 11th album, Richer Than I Ever Been, which also featured ‘2021,’ with Jazmine Sullivan. The album came out in December of 2021, and it contained contributions from artists including Wiz Khalifa, the Dream, Future, Timbaland, and Wale.

When it came to Maybach Music, they nailed it. Ross not only released many albums, but he also signed other popular musicians like Meek Mill and Wale. Ross has several interests outside of music. He has authored two books that were “New York Times” bestsellers, and he is the owner of multiple Wingstop restaurants. As a musician, Ross advocates for opulence, perseverance, and ingenuity. However, in 2018, the rapper experienced a series of seizures. A lack of sleep was blamed for the attacks. Over time, the rapper has made it a priority to get more shut-eye.
