Richard Timothy Smith, born on March 25, 1942, and went by the stage name Richard O’Brien professionally, is a British-New Zealander actor, writer, composer, musician, and television presenter. In 1973, he penned the lyrics and Music for the musical stage performance The Rocky Horror Performance, which has continued in production ever since. In addition to that, he collaborated with filmmaker Jim Sharman to write the script for the film adaptation.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), in which he featured as Riff Raff, became an enormous commercial and critical success worldwide. A sizable subculture sprang up around the picture. O’Brien collaborated on the writing of the musical Shock Treatment (1981) and had an appearance in the film adaptation of the musical as the character Dr. Cosmo McKinley.O’Brien was the host of the game show The Crystal Maze on Channel 4 for a total of four seasons between the years 1990 and 1993.

He provided the voice for the character of Lawrence Fletcher in the Phineas and Ferb animated series that aired on Disney Channel from 2007 through 2015, as well as in the series’ two feature films released in 2011 and 2020. Flash Gordon (1980), Robin of Sherwood (1985), Dark City (1998), Ever After (1998), Dungeons & Dragons (2000), and Elvira’s Haunted Hills (2001) are among his other acting credits.

O’Brien got dual citizenship in New Zealand in 2011 after establishing a long and successful career in the United Kingdom. Since then, he has made his home in Tauranga. O’Brien refers to himself using he/him pronouns since he considers himself to be of a third gender. Because there was already an actor named Richard Smith, he began his career in the entertainment industry using his mother’s maiden name.

The author asserts that his upbringing in New Zealand “instilled him with egalitarian ideals that helped him transcend British class restrictions.”O’Brien enrolled in courses that focused on the process of acting, and after completing those programs, he participated in several theater performances as an actor. During the summer of 1972, he was introduced to director Jim Sharman, who ultimately decided to use him in the London production of Jesus Christ Superstar as an Apostle and a Leper. In the subsequent performance of Sam Shepard’s The Unseen Hand that Sharman directed at the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs in March 1973, O’Brien was cast as Willie, the extraterrestrial. In addition to that, Sharman was instrumental in turning O’Brien’s rough draft of a schlock-horror comic book fantasy adventure into a finished product.

Sharman recommended switching the working title from They Came from Denton High to The Rocky Horror Show, and the show’s first performance took place at the Theatre Upstairs in June of 1973. Within a few weeks, it had been a box-office smash, going from the Royal Court to the Classic Cinema, which was a cinema on the King’s Road that was about to be demolished, then to the King’s Road Theatre (which was once a cinema known as the Essoldo), and finally into the West End at the Comedy Theatre.

After seeing the second night’s performance of The Rocky Horror Show at the Theatre Upstairs, Jonathan King hastened to record the original cast soundtrack in only a little over 48 hours over an off-stage weekend. He then hurriedly released it on his UK Records label. In addition, he invested 20% of his own money with producer Michael White, who provided the remaining 80% of the funding.

O’Brien hosted the program’s first four seasons, which aired from 1990 through 1995. It was consistently the show with the most outstanding ratings on Channel 4, reaching a maximum of 7 million people for the Christmas special broadcast in 1993.

After the conclusion of the fourth season of The Crystal Maze in 1993, O’Brien decided to leave the program and was succeeded as host by Edward Tudor-Pole. The program was canceled during its second season without O’Brien’s participation. O’Brien has portrayed a variety of parts during his career, one of which being the Child Catcher in the West End theater production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, which he also conceptualized.

In addition to this, he does comedic and cabaret-style performances at venues all around the globe, where he sings, among other things, songs from the Rocky Horror Show. In 1995, he delivered a few performances as the demonic seducer Mephistopheles Smith in a musical comedy act that he had written and named Disgracefully Yours. He subsequently permitted the show to be transformed into a musical, and Eubank Productions was the first company to do so for the Kansas City Fringe Fest in 2006.
