Carrie Brownstein (born Carrie Rachel Brownstein) is an American singer, actor, writer, director, and comedian who is most known for her work in the comedy genre. Following her time as a member of the rock band Excuse 17, she moved onto the stage with the rock trio Seater-Kinney, which gained widespread attention. When she was away from Sleater-Kinney for a considerable period of time, she established the band Wild Flag. This was also the time period in which Brownstein co-wrote and acted in a series of comic skits with Fred Arisen, which were later expanded into the satirical comedy television series Portlandia. While attending Evergreen, Brownstein met fellow students Corrin Tucker, Kathleen Hanna, Tobi Vail, and Becca Albee, all of whom became lifelong friends. Excuse 17, a band she created with Albee and CJ Phillips, was one of the pioneering bands of the riot grill movement in the Olympia music scene, and played a major part in the development of third-wave feminism. She was also a member of the band Excuse 17. Excuse 17 shared the stage with Tucker’s band Heavens to Betsy on a number of occasions. Those two bands each had an appearance on the Free to Fight collection. As a side project, she and Tucker founded the band Sleater-Kinney, which subsequently produced the track Free to Fight, which was a collaboration with Cypher in the Snow.
