The year after, he started three games for the club, filling in for an injured starter named Lynn Dickey, who had missed time due to injury. However, his squad was victorious in none of their games this season.

After being cut from the club by coach Bart Starr in 1977, his career as a football player ended abruptly. After that, in 1978, he was a British Columbia Lions football team member who competed in the Canadian Football League. After his success on the gridiron started to wane in the late 1970s, Autry used his contacts in the Hollywood film industry and launched a career in acting.

It is said that a mutual acquaintance introduced him to Robert Altman, which led to him landing a part in Robert Altman’s 1978 film Remember My Name. In addition, he portrayed Carlos Brown in several films, including the 1979 sports drama North Dallas Forty, the 1980 feature Popeye, and the 1981 action thriller Southern Comfort. He acted in movies such as the comedy Brewster’s Millions from 1985 and the sports drama Amazing Grace and Chuck from 1987.

Later in his career, he became well-known for his role as the Mississippi small-town police officer Bubba Skinner in the long-running police procedural drama series In the Heat of the Night, which aired from 1988 through 1995.

After playing this legendary character, he then went on to play Rick Bradshaw in the comedy Grace Under Fire, which aired for two seasons between 1995 and 1996. In the wake of this, Autry established his production business in 1997 under Dirt Road Productions. He wrote the screenplay through his own production business, oversaw the production, and directed the indie Western film The Legend of Jake Kincaid in 2002.

After that, he became the Chief Executive Officer of the Fresno-based production firm Autry Entertainment Group. As a Republican candidate, he won the election for Mayor of Fresno, a city in California, in the year 2000. On January 5, 2001, he was sworn in as Fresno’s 23rd Mayor and immediately began his term. Autry was re-elected as Mayor of Fresno in 2004 and remained in that position until January 6, 2009.
