Will Smith

Willard Carroll Smith Jr. was born on September 25, 1968, and he is an American actor, rapper, and film producer. In addition to his four Grammy nominations, Smith has been shortlisted for two Academy Awards and two Golden Globes.

Upon the conclusion of the show, Smith moved on to a successful film career, starring in such blockbusters as Independence Day (1996) and Men in Black. Only he has had eight consecutive films with opening weekend box office receipts of over $100 million (and worldwide receipts of over $150 million).

According to Forbes, Smith is the most marketable celebrity in the world. In April 2007, he was named “Hollywood’s most powerful actor” by Newsweek. As of 2014, 17 of the 21 films in which he played a key role had grossed over $100 million internationally, with five of those grossing over $500 million. At the year’s end in 2016, worldwide receipts from his movies totalled $7.5 billion. Smith received Best Actor Oscar nods for his portrayals of Muhammad Ali in Ali (2001) and stockbroker Chris Gardner in The Pursuit of Happiness. Smith’s first professional endeavour was a hip-hop duo with his boyhood friend, turntablist, and producer Jeffrey “DJ Jazzy Jeff” Townes.

After that, they settled on a plan to collaborate. With the addition of Smith’s friend, Clarence Holmes (Ready Rock C), on beatboxing duties, the band now numbered three members.  Smith became well-known for his witty raps and his skill in “fighting” rhymes that were both clean and effective. The song became a smash in Smith’s final year of high school.

In the 1998 picture Enemy of the State, Will Smith co-starred with Gene Hackman. He declined the part of Neo in The Matrix the next year in favour of Wild Wild West (1999). After the film’s initial release, Smith said in interviews that he “made a mistake on Wild Wild West,” but he now says he doesn’t regret his decision because Keanu Reeves’ performance as Neo was better than anything he could have done. Who knows, maybe that might have made more of an impression.

Will Smith plays Dr Bennet Omalu of the Brain Injury Research Institute, who discovered chronic traumatic encephalopathy, in the film Concussion. A sceptic of the film at first, Smith said, “Some of my greatest recollections are of witnessing my son catch and toss a football.” I didn’t want to be the one who made the movie that portrayed football as a dangerous sport.

Smith married Sheree Zampino in 1992, and she is now his wife. On that day in 1992, Willard Carroll “Trey” Smith III entered the world. In 1995, they decided to go their separate ways. Trey made a cameo appearance in the music video for his dad’s 1998 hit “Just the Two of Us.” His TV credits include The Oprah Winfrey Show, David Blaine: Real or Magic, and two episodes of the sitcom All of Us.

Although Smith was known as “Prince Charming” in high school, he rebranded himself as “Fresh Prince” to reflect his newfound interest in hip hop. He hooked up with DJ Jeffrey Townes, a former classmate, in 1981. Their first single, “Girls Ain’t Nothing but Trouble,” was released in 1986 under the DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince alias, and their first studio album, Rock the House, was released the following year. In 1988, the group’s breakout track, “Parents Just Don’t Understand,” was nominated for a Grammy.

Smith’s music was dubbed “light rap” because it didn’t deal with any heavy topics or have any depressing lyrics. His platinum-certified albums and music videos caught the attention of television executives. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, a popular sitcom from the 1990s, was based on Smith’s life. Smith was nominated for two Golden Globes, and she served as an executive producer for the show’s last season on NBC until the cancellation came at the request of the actor.

As a result of his success on the small screen, Smith decided to make the transition to the big screen with his film Where the Day Takes You (1992). The cinematic version of John Guare’s smash play Six Degrees of Separation was his first major role (1993). However, it was the 1995 action comedy-thriller Bad Boys that really put him on the map.

The film received negative reviews but nonetheless made over $100 million overseas, proving Smith’s widespread appeal. Independence Day was the highest-grossing film of 1996, and he played a pivotal role in it. The next year, with the science fiction comedy Men in Black, for which he also recorded the Grammy Award–winning title song, he scored another box office blockbuster. Smith’s debut solo album, Big Willie Style, was a Top 40 smash thanks to the song “Gettin’ Jiggy wit It;” his second, Millennium, followed in 1997.

Later, Smith and his son Jaden co-starred in the science fiction epic After Earth (2013), which was based on an idea Smith had come up with. In 2015, Smith portrayed a neurologist who discovered the prevalence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in NFL players in the film Concussion, and in 2016, he played a scam artist in the thriller Focus. Both the distraught father in “Collateral Beauty” and “Deadshot” from “Suicide Squad” were roles he played in 2016. Then, he appeared as a cop in the Netflix action film Bright, which was set in Los Angeles where both humans and magical creatures coexisted.

Then, Smith got the part of the Genie in the Aladdin Disney movie. Smith had two roles in the 2019 film Gemini Man: an elder assassin and a younger clone, the latter of whom was a digitally created version of Smith in his twenties. Smith also lends his voice to a spy who is turned into a pigeon in the 2019 cartoon Spies in Disguise.

After that, Smith appeared in Bad Boys for Life, the follow-up to the 1995 blockbuster he featured in. In the 2021 film King Richard, Smith portrayed Richard Williams, Sr., the father of tennis greats Serena Williams and Venus Williams. The Academy Award for Best Actor went to Smith for his performance here. But an incident that transpired during the ceremony tainted his triumph. Smith was not amused by Chris Rock’s joke about his wife, the actress Jada Pinkett Smith. He walked up on stage, slapped Rock, and yelled obscenities at him. Later on, Smith apologized to Rock for his actions.

Lost and Found and Born to Reign, two of Smith’s subsequent albums did not fare as well commercially. Smith, in the early 2000s, not only acted in films but also produced several of them. In addition, he and his wife conceived and produced the sitcom All of Us. In 2018, he also hosted the documentary series One Strange Rock, which centred on our planet. Smith and Mark Manson co-wrote a memoir titled Will, which was released in 2021. It was reported by Forbes that Smith is the most marketable star in the world. Newsweek called him “Hollywood’s most powerful actor” in April 2007.

Of the 21 films in which he has appeared as a leading actor, 17 have made over $100 million worldwide by 2014, and five have made over $500 million. As of the end of 2016, his films had earned $7.5 billion around the world. Smith played boxer Muhammad Ali in Ali (2001) and stockbroker Chris Gardner in The Pursuit of Happiness, both of which earned him Oscar nominations for Best Actor (2006). Smith got his start in the industry as the MC of the hip-hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, alongside his childhood buddy and turntablist/producer Jeffrey “DJ Jazzy Jeff” Townes.

Smith recruited his friend Clarence Holmes as the group’s beatboxer, expanding the unit to a trio. Word Up’s A&R guy Paul Oakenfold first heard them perform their tune “Girls Ain’t Nothing But Trouble,” which tells the story of the many comedic misadventures in which Smith and his ex-DJ/rap collaborator Mark Forrest found themselves. Lyrics from the “I Dream of Jeannie” theme were included in the track. Smith gained popularity for his raps that told humorous stories and for his skilful, swear-free “battle” rhymes. The song hit the charts a month before Smith finished high school.

In the 1998 film, Enemy of the State, Smith and Gene Hackman had lead roles. He passed on playing Neo in The Matrix in favour of Wild Wild West the next year. Despite conceding in interviews following the film’s release that he “made a mistake on Wild Wild West,” Smith has claimed that he has no regrets about his decision. He claims that Keanu Reeves’ portrayal of Neo was greater than what Smith could have produced. Perhaps that would have had better results.
