TobyMac

American Christian hip-hop music producer, songwriter, vocalist, and recording artist TobyMac is also known simply as TobyMac. Toby’s songs are a welcome exception, especially given the general consensus that Christian music does not enjoy the same level of popularity as conventional hip-hop music. Toby was nurtured in a conventional Christian home in Virginia, where he was born. Even from a young age, he had a deep appreciation for music. In the late 1980s, Toby and two of his other pals, Kevin Max Smith and Michael Tait, came together to establish a band that they dubbed “DC Talk.” DC Talk has a string of critically acclaimed albums to their name.

Toby started his solo music career after the band the trio was in took a break from creating music together for a while. Momentum, his first studio album, was released in 2001. Toby found success with his CD by combining several genres of music, including urban rock and rhythms as well as traditional Christian music. Since then, Toby has released six successful studio albums, including one titled “Christmas in Diverse City,” in addition to a holiday CD that bears his name. Toby has been honoured with seven “Grammy Awards” during the course of his solo career, and he has been responsible for the sale of more than 10 million copies of his albums.

Toby has also collaborated with Kevin Max and Michael Tait on the writing of a few of books that are part of their “Jesus Freaks” series. These novels were written by Toby.TobyMac was born in the suburbs of Virginia on October 22, 1964, to parents who were both very committed Christians. Toby’s affinity for modern music was something he discovered very early on in his life, and he listened to a wide variety of it, from rap to hip-hop to rock music. At the age of thirteen, he attended a religious camp, where he was encouraged by teachings from the so-called “Bible.” Apart from him, there have only been a very small number of artists who have mixed biblical texts with music.

His true source of motivation was the musician Sting, whose band, “The Police,” he saw in 1983 when they were on tour. Instantaneously, he was captivated by the melody, as well as by the idea that a piece of music could be both beautiful and provocative at the same time. After completing his high school education at a nearby institution, he decided that he wanted to pursue a career in music and began seeking for others who shared his interests so that he could start his career with them. Toby and Michael Tait were classmates in high school, and in 1987, the two of them decided to pursue their shared passion for music by founding the band known as “DC Talk.”

They met Kevin Max Smith at ‘Liberty University,’ which is where they both attended, and once Kevin joined them, everything began making sense. Both of them went to the same school. After the success of their first studio album, which was titled “DC Talk,” which was released in 1989, the band decided to go on a tour throughout the country. Because of this, they gained even more visibility in the mainstream. After the overwhelming success of their first album, they quickly followed it up in 1990 with the release of their second studio album titled “Nu Thang.” In terms of sales, the sophomore effort was more successful than its predecessor, “DC Talk,” and it was awarded the “gold” certification from the “Recording Industry Association of America” (RIAA.)

Their run of success continued with the release of their third album, titled “Free at Last,” which was even more successful than their previous album, “Nu Thang.” The RIAA eventually awarded the album the platinum certification for sales. Because of their widespread popularity, they were invited to appear on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” which catapulted them into the public consciousness in the United States. The band’s style was grungy, but also included elements of rap and current Christian music, which resulted in a sound that was both authentic and modern. By the time they released their album titled “Jesus Freak” in 1995, they had reached the pinnacle of their careers.

The album received the “double-platinum” certification, and it was immediately followed by the massive “Jesus Freak Tour.” Another happy chapter in the band’s illustrious history was written in 1998 with the publication of their third and last full-length studio album, named “Supernatural.” According to “The Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Music,” the band known as “DC Talk” was recognised as “the most popular blatantly Christian group of all time” in the year 2002. All of their albums, with the exception of “DC Talk” and “Supernatural,” have been recognised with at least one “Grammy” award each.

Before the three members of the band went their separate ways in the early 2000s, they put out a record called “Solo,” which included two new songs from each of their own solo projects. At that point, all three of them had already begun to focus their efforts on their own projects.
Momentum, Toby’s first solo album, was released in 2001 and immediately climbed to the #1 place on the “Billboard Heatseekers” list. Toby’s sound eventually became characterised by a contemporary fusion of rap and grunge music.

A number of the tracks on the album, including “Extreme Days,” “Get this Party Started,” and “Yours,” have been used in a number of different movies and television shows. All three tracks, in addition to the single titled “Momentum,” were included in the soundtrack of the video game “Crackdown.” The CD was nominated for a Grammy Award and took home many Dove Awards. Toby’s 2004 album, titled “Welcome to Diverse City,” continued in a style that was stylistically similar to his previous work but also including a touch of reggae.

He was given the prize for “Rap/Hip-Hop Album of the Year” at the “Dove Awards” since the album was favourably received by both music reviewers and fans of the genre. Toby continued to deliver the remixed versions of his first two solo albums, which were well received by the general public. His album “Portable Sounds,” which was released in 2007, was yet another example of his unique style, which combines conventional rhythms with non-traditional ones. The record was yet another successful addition to his growing collection of albums.

Both the ‘Billboard 200’ and the ‘SoundScan Contemporary Christian Overall’ charts placed the album in the top slot upon its first release. The album debuted at number 10 on the Billboard 200 list. As a result of his outstanding contributions to the record, Toby was recognised as the “Artist of the Year” at the Dove Awards. Toby’s debut live album as a solo artist was titled “Alive and Transported.” It was released in 2008 and was nominated for both a Grammy and a GMA Dove award. Toby won both awards. The album includes cover versions of various hit tracks released by ‘DC Talk’ in the 1990s, as well as singles released by Toby on his own.

In 2010, the album “Tonight” was launched, and during the first week of its release, it sold 79,000 copies. It was able to climb all the way up to position number six on the Billboard 200 list. In addition to Toby’s distinctive hip-hop, rap, and rock rhythms, this attempt turned out to be a successful one, as it contained sounds from Latin and funk music. Toby’s first Christmas CD, titled “Christmas in Diverse City,” was published the following year (2011). This album was the product of a cooperation between Toby and a number of different artists. Toby’s third studio album, titled ‘Dubbed and Freq’d: A Remix Project,’ was published in 2012 and included a compilation of remixes of tracks from his first two studio albums.

His second studio album, titled “Eye on It,” was published in the latter half of 2012 and dominated the “Billboard 200” charts, becoming the first Christian album to achieve this distinction since 1997. Despite this, the album was only able to reach the number eight slot in the chart during its second week of release. The song “This Is Not a Test” was released in August of 2015 and made its debut on the “Billboard 200” chart at position number four. It debuted at number one on the ‘Top Christian Albums’ list after its first week of release, during which it sold 35,000 copies.

Toby’s old bandmates from “DC Talk,” Kevin Max Smith and Michael Tait, have collaborated with him on the writing of two books. The books are part of a series called “Jesus Freaks,” and they celebrate the lives of various different Christian martyrs. In collaboration with Tait, he is the author of the books ‘Under God’ and ‘Living under God: Discovering Your Part in God’s Plan.’
Toby has been a frequent guest on various chat programmes broadcast on television, and the rights to some of his songs have been purchased by movie and television producers so that they may be used in their own productions.

The musician TobyMac has been married to his wife Amanda since 1994. Toby makes frequent trips to her native Jamaica since she is originally from there. His admiration for Jamaican music is audible in a couple of the songs that he has written. The family of five presently calls Franklin, Tennessee home. The couple currently resides there with all of their children. Since his son Truett McKeehan, an aspiring rapper, passed away in 2019 at the age of 21 from an accidental drug overdose, his father, the Grammy-winning Christian artist TobyMac (also known as Toby McKeehan), has not produced much original music. He has, however, released a few “lost” demos and a concert recording that included “21 Years,” a song that mourned the loss of Truett.

Now, a new album that reflects the journey that the songwriter has taken in the almost three years since the death of his oldest son was released on Friday. The album is a collaboration with Truett’s sister, Marlee, Sheryl Crow, and TobyMac’s former bandmates from DC Talk, the Christian rap trio that formed at Liberty University and launched TobyMac’s career. The album Life After Death is full of songs of regret and melancholy, as well as a proclamation about the kindness of God made by a father who is grieving the loss of his daughter.

TobyMac addressed an intimate gathering of hundreds of fans, staff members, and donors at WGTS, a Christian music radio station in Rockville, Maryland, the night before the album’s release that God had been good enough to teach him that there is life beyond death. “It’s difficult to even put into words because there are moments when I nearly don’t want life. My suspicion is that I’m being unfaithful to my kid in some way. But I’ve come to understand that God is good in some way or another. TobyMac alludes to a song that he plays alongside DC Talk alums Michael Tait and Kevin Max as evidence that the title of the album relates to individuals who were left behind by Truett.

TobyMac is widely regarded as one of the most productive musicians working in the Christian music business. Toby has provided thousands of people all around the globe with varied anthems to their religion ever since his early days in DC Talk, and he has now gone on to have a booming solo career that has garnered him seven Grammy Awards and over 16 million unit sales. In 2019, he and his family were dealt a tremendous blow when Toby’s first-born son Truett lost tragically as a result of an accidental drug overdose shortly after performing in his first headlining event. This was a terrible loss for the whole family.
