On March 3, 1981, in the Swedish city of Linköping, Tobias Jens Forge entered this world.  The strictness of his new stepmother was obvious. She was a Christian, and one of the first individuals Forge met who caused him to reject Christianity.

When Tobias was younger, he could sneakily tag along with his older brother Sebastian (by thirteen years) to open-air concerts. Before Ghost, Tobias Forge had already established himself as a talented musician. He was a member of several different Stockhold rock bands, including Repugnant and Crashdet. Mary Moore and Leviathan were two of the other aliases he went by.

Tobias Forge had no doubts about his future as a professional guitarist. Forge became the lead singer for Ghost, in its sixth incarnation, after the dissolution of his previous band. He had recently become a father of twins when he began his musical career in his late twenties.

So he put up a Ghost track snippet on his MySpace profile. Their website appeals solely to the most dedicated fans of gloomy, heavy music due to its stark simplicity. Within the first two days, they began receiving communications from record labels all over the world. Ghost seemingly sprang from nowhere to become… a noteworthy band.

Tobias Forge, aka “Papa Emeritus” and “Cardinal Copia,” has been fronting Ghost and writing most of their material since 2006. In addition to playing the guitar, he has skills in a wide range of other musical instruments.

Prior to their legal issues, Ghost was considered one of Sweden’s most mysterious hard rock bands. Tobias Forge and the rest of the group wore masks and refused to identify themselves. The band gained notoriety for its highbrow concepts, lengthy backstories, and elaborate concerts. The musicians’ fronts resembled those of Satanic priests, while their backs were covered with faceless cardinals.

With the release of each Ghost album, fans have eagerly anticipated the debut of a new frontman. Papa Emeritus was the focal point of the band’s self-titled debut album. His successor Papa Emeritus II took over for the Infestissumam cycle in 2012, and three years later, Papa Emeritus III was introduced for the Meloria Run. The narrative thickened in 2017 when Papa Nihil deposed Papa Emeritus III. Papa Nihil, or Papa Emeritus Zero, was one such Papa.

Ghost has recruited a young priest by the name of Cardinal Copia to act as their leader for their upcoming fourth studio album, Prequelle. In 2017, Tobias Forge, vocalist for Ghost, was sued by four ex-members of the band Nameless Ghouls for breach of privacy. Ex-guitarist Simon Söderberg publicly identified the other three members of Nameless Ghouls in a Facebook post.

Forge was successful in the appeal that he filed in October 2018. Both the judge and defendant, Tobias Forge, were prominent Freemasons in Sweden, therefore their verdict was well respected. In February, the appeal was deemed unsuccessful. According to Ultimate Guitar, another petition was filed.

On December 12, 2012, the band unveiled their first official channel on the video-sharing platform. Presently, there are 1,890,000 viewers on this channel. The group’s YouTube channel was introduced to the public on December 12, 2012. The band’s first video upload was a webcast of the title track from their rock album, “Infesstissuman is Coming Soon.” Music videos and recorded CDs can be found here. Ghost’s early promotion came courtesy of Tobias Forge.

Since he was a little boy, Tobias Forge has been drawn to music. The Ghost goes under many aliases, but one of them is the Nameless Ghouls, who share the Ghost’s contempt for organized religion. This is because the band’s creator, Tobias Forge, has long disapproved of the man’s faith. Even his mother was treated badly, he claims, by others in his religion. His band’s musical aesthetic was largely influenced by that era. In many ways, the band’s success can be traced back to the band’s underlying concept. This group has always been divisive because of the threat its nonreligious message offers to the beliefs of many different faiths.

Forge was the band’s primary singer and guitarist for the pop rock band Subvision from 2002 to 2008. Guitarist Martin Posner and bassist Gustaf Lindström also made significant contributions. The band released just one full-length album, 2006’s So Far So Noir, and two EPs before disbanding. Prior to joining Crashdet, he fronted the band Subvision as their lead singer. When he was credited as a Ghost songwriter, he became a media darling and the subject of persistent suspicions that he was actually one of the band’s members in disguise.

Forge headed the pop rock band Subvision as lead vocalist and guitarist from 2002 to 2008. Ghost members Martin Posner (guitar) and Gustaf Lindström (bass) were both members of the band at one point. Before breaking up, the band known as So Far So Noir issued one album and two extended plays (2006).

After years of playing in minor bands, Forge finally broke through in 2006 when he was hired as the primary songwriter and business leader for Ghost. When performing live, he dons the masks of both the band’s demonic antipope, Papa Emeritus, and their vocal leader, Cardinal Copia. According to former Ghost member and Martin Posner’s bandmate Peter Hällje, he created the Papa Emeritus character. Hällje decided to let Posner use the Papa Emeritus identity to promote his new band, despite the fact that Posner had never played as the character before.

It appears that Forge also performed the vast majority of the other instruments on his recordings. He said that a session drummer was used during the making of their self-titled debut album. Papa Emeritus, his ghost persona, is the organization’s leader. Collectively, the band members call themselves Nameless Ghouls. Jack Osbourne said in an interview that the Foo Fighters’ current lead vocalist, Dave Grohl, used to be in the band when it was known as the Nameless Ghouls.

From 2006 to 2010, Simon Söderberg of Ghost was a member of Magna Carta Cartel (or MCC), an alternative rock band headquartered in Linköping. Singers Posner and Söderberg on bass and guitarist Forge all chipped in on the band’s vocals and guitar work. When Ghost was down to a trio, they had to go on a sabbatical. In July 2016, Posner reformed his previous band Ghost into the more formidable Magna Carta Cartel. The band’s defunct members sued Forge for unpaid royalties in April 2017, making public Forge’s identity as Papa Emeritus despite the band’s theme of secrecy.

Popularly regarded as a top metal vocalist in the industry. Also, there’s a long roll call of Swedish luminaries who’ve made their mark on the world stage. March 3 is Tobias Forge’s birthday.

In 2012, during a concert in Linköping, Sweden, the band pretended to retire Papa Emeritus and introduce a new vocalist named Papa Emeritus II, who turned revealed to be Forge dressed in a different disguise. Infestissumam, the band’s second studio album, came out in 2013. Due to a trademark dispute in the US, the band had to rebrand as “Ghost B.C.” before releasing their album in the country. This CD, as well as the EP included with If You Have Ghost, includes Forge’s Papa Emeritus II guise (2013).

To coincide with the release of Meliora, the band’s third studio album, 2015 saw the arrival of Papa Emeritus III. After Ghost’s final Popestar Tour show of 2016-2017, Papa Emeritus III was officially retired (and dragged off stage), and Papa Emeritus Zero (now known as Papa Nihil) was unveiled. Forge unveiled his new stage name, Cardinal Copia, in his 2018 album Prequelle. On the final night of their fourth record tour, Cardinal Copia was publicly crowned and announced as Papa Emeritus IV.
