He had been interested in a career in showbiz, though not necessarily as an actor. Earlier in 1996, he had co-written and co-produced the independent feature picture Young Boys Incorporated. He says that seeing that film was a major inspiration for him to pursue a career in acting and filmmaking. In 1999, he tried out for a part in the syndicated game show “Battle Dome,” and he got the part. The breakthrough performance opened doors for further acting roles in movies, music videos, and advertisements.

His performance as Julius Rock in the sitcom “Everybody Hates Chris,” which ran from 2005 to 2009, propelled his fame around the world, however, his role in “Friday After Next” was his breakthrough role. While starring in “White Chicks” in 2004, Adam Sandler rewrote a part for him in “The Longest Yard.” Even so, he had tried out for a different part in the same movie.

I’ve never had any interest in acting or performing. However, I must tell you about a guy I used to play football with on the Rams; his name is Derrick Carr. In the offseason, we collaborated on a screenplay and filmed a movie in Detroit using our own money. The book was titled “Young Boys Incorporated,” and it detailed the reign of a notorious Detroit gang. Their main selling point of them was that they would acquire infants and toddlers.

Because if the kids were taken up, they’d go to juvenile detention, and then when they turned eighteen, they’d be released and able to start over. That’s why we ended up doing that flick. It really sucked. All of our cash was pooled together. For me, it was instantaneous. At the conclusion of that season, I had completed my rookie year with the Redskins. We kept getting booted out of establishments. The book completely captivated me. That was always the plan, and I made it happen.
