Steve Kerr

An ex-professional basketball player and current coach for the Golden State Warriors, Stephen Douglas Kerr is an American citizen. He has won a total of six NBA titles: three as a player for the Chicago Bulls and two for the San Antonio Spurs. He has also won three as head coach of the Golden State Warriors. Kerr, who grew up in the Middle East, played high school football for the Palisades Dolphins at Palisades Charter High School in Los Angeles. Kerr was a basketball player for the Arizona Wildcats in college. Starting his career in 1988 with the Phoenix Suns, he was later sent to the Cleveland Cavaliers. He played for them for three seasons before moving on to the Orlando Magic for a single year and then to the Chicago Bulls. With the help of Kerr, the Bulls won their second NBA title.

After being traded from the Bulls to the Spurs in 1999, Kerr became only the second player in NBA history to win four championships in a row. Once a member of the San Antonio Spurs, Kerr spent the final season of his playing career with the Portland Trail Blazers in 2003. After leaving the Suns’ front office in 2010, he became a TV analyst before returning in 2007 as general manager. For the Warriors, he took over as head coach in 2014.

His siblings’ names are Susan, John, and Andrew. Since the 1920s, his ancestors had made Beirut their permanent home. Stanley and Elsa Kerr, his paternal grandparents, volunteered for Near East Relief and travelled to the Middle East. His dad, Malcolm, worked at the American University of Beirut and rose to become president.

Kerr was raised in the Middle East, primarily in Beirut. Before going to the United States, he received his education at Cairo American College in Egypt and the American Community School in Beirut, Lebanon. While he was there, he discovered a passion for basketball and joined the Palisades Dolphins.

On the morning of January 18, 1984, Kerr’s father was murdered by the Islamic Jihad, while Kerr was a freshman at the University of Arizona. He was 18 at the time. Grief over his father’s unexpected death weighed heavily on Kerr.

Kerr was a less-than-desirable high school prospect who decided to study general studies at the University of Arizona. He earned a spot on the basketball team for the University of Arizona (the Wildcats). This was when he reached his peak as a player and caught the eye of NBA scouts.

Kerr spent five years (1983–1988) with Arizona, during which time he made 129 appearances and averaged 11.2 points per game. During the 1986 FIBA World Championship, which took place in Spain, he competed for the United States national basketball team, which ultimately won the tournament and the gold medal. Two years later, he received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona in General Studies with concentrations in history, sociology, and English.

Steve Kerr was drafted by the Phoenix Suns in the second round of the 1988 NBA draught. His first game in the NBA was on March 11, 1989, a loss for the Suns to the Milwaukee Bucks. He spent the next three seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers after being moved there the previous year, before joining the Orlando Magic in 1992–1993.

In 1993, he was a free agent, and the Chicago Bulls signed him. After Michael Jordan’s first retirement, the Bulls struggled in his first two seasons with the franchise. They got to the postseason, but they didn’t win it all. In the 1995-1996 season, when Jordan played a full season, the team’s record improved by a wide margin. They ended up winning the NBA title that season and the next two as well.

After receiving an unbelievable feed from Jordan, Kerr made the game-winning jumper in game six of the 1997 NBA Finals against the Utah Jazz. After being traded to the Spurs in 1999, he got to play for great coach Gregg Popovich. The Spurs played outstanding basketball all year, and they finally got their hands on an NBA championship trophy. Kerr was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers for the 2001-02 season, despite the team’s success the year before. For the Blazers, he appeared in 65 games and averaged 4.1 points per contest in scoring.

For his final season of professional basketball, Kerr came back to San Antonio. In a season where the Spurs won the NBA title for a second time, he made a huge impact. Kerr played in 910 games during his career and averaged 6.0 points per contest before calling it quits. He triumphed in the 1997 NBA Three-Point Shootout. The Arizona Wildcats retired his No. 25 jersey in 2003, and soon after he retired, Steve Kerr began working as a television analyst for Turner Network Television (TNT). Together with Marv Albert, he was a member of the commentary team. And in a segment called “Steve’s Refreshing Thoughts,” which he hosted, he shared some fun facts about the game’s background.

After working as the general manager for the Suns, he took a break from broadcasting before returning to TNT for the 2010-11 NBA season. Between 2011 and 2015, Kerr also contributed often to the sports website Grantland and offered commentary for CBS and Turner Sports. Former player Steve Kerr joined the new ownership group of his former Phoenix Suns squad in 2004. He was hired in June 2007 to take over as the team’s general manager. Despite his stellar playing and coaching careers, his stint as general manager of the Suns was a letdown.

He was always involved in roster changes and other aspects of Sun’s management. However, the Suns remained one of the NBA clubs without a championship title, a status they maintain to this day.

As of May 14, 2014, Steve Kerr was the head coach of the Golden State Warriors. He had previously served as president and general manager of the Phoenix Suns from June 15, 2010, until that date. Since 1975, when they last won the NBA title, the Warriors had a terrible losing record and finished last in their division every year. Kerr, upon accepting the position, opted to implement some aspects of the triangle attack, a strategy frequently used by his former Chicago Bulls coach Phil Jackson. After 40 years, the Warriors finally won an NBA championship by beating the Cleveland Cavaliers.

After experiencing back pain since the 2015 NBA playoffs, he had surgery in July 2015. Unfortunately, the operation failed and he now has a fluid leak in his spine. Subsequently, in September of the same year, he had another operation. During this time, he has put former player and current assistant coach Luke Walton in charge of the Warriors.

The decision paid off as the Warriors went 39-4 in 2015-16 without Kerr at the helm, proving that Walton could lead the team to success without him. The Warriors reached the NBA Finals that year, where they met the Cavaliers again. The Cavaliers, though, won this round. On November 20, 2016, the NBA fined him $25,000 for openly criticizing NBA officials during an interview with KNBR 680’s radio show on November 17. Steve Kerr and his future wife, Margot, first met in 1985. A mutual friend arranged a blind date for them while they were both enrolled at the University of Arizona. They started dating in early 1985, and on September 15, 1990, they were married. Two sons, Nick and Matthew, and a girl, Madeleine, complete their family.

Kerr’s parents, American teachers Malcolm H. Kerr and Ann Kerr (née Zwicker), both had expertise in Middle Eastern studies, and that’s where Kerr got her start in life. Young Steve Kerr and his family eventually settled in California, though frequent business trips to the Middle East meant lengthy stays there. Kerr’s father took over as president of the American University of Beirut in 1982 when Kerr was a senior in high school. Since only Malcolm Kerr relocated to Beirut during the civil war in Lebanon, the city remained largely deserted. Steve Kerr was ultimately forced to leave the country after a visit there in the summer of 1983 ended in chaos when the airport was attacked. His father was assassinated outside of his office in January 1984; Islamic extremists claimed responsibility.

Steve Kerr was always active and sporty, with basketball being his primary focus. Without much interest from other schools, he joined the Wildcats’ basketball team in 1983 and enrolled at the University of Arizona. He developed into a star point guard and team leader, and his three-point shooting prowess was legendary.

Kerr missed the 1986-87 school year due to a knee injury sustained at the World Basketball Championships. A lot of people wrote him off as a player, but he came back the following year. In 1988, his senior year, he led Arizona all the way to the national semifinals. By the end of his college career, Kerr held the record for the highest percentage of three-pointers made in a single season (.573). The next year, he received his Bachelor of General Studies degree.

Kerr was picked by the Phoenix Suns in the second round of the 1988 NBA draught. However, the Orlando Magic acquired him in 1992 and the Cleveland Cavaliers did so in 1989. Kerr joined the Chicago Bulls the following season and quickly became a star for the team. Later, he established himself as a crucial cog in an all-star team that Michael Jordan helmed. The Bulls set a record by going 72-10 during the regular season in the 1995–96 season and went on to win the NBA championship that year. The following three seasons, they repeated as winners, with Kerr’s performance in game six of the 1997 finals standing out as pivotal. Following Jordan’s retirement at the end of the 1997–98 season, several key players decided to depart the Bulls.

Steve attended a local Beirut school for his elementary and secondary education. A year later, he continued teaching at an American Community School in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. He attended what is now known as Palisades Charter High School in Los Angeles, California when it was still known as Palisades High School. He then boarded a plane for Egypt, where he enrolled at the Cairo American College. He moved to America and immediately enrolled at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
