To date, Snoop has sold over 35 million albums worldwide and over 23 million in the United States alone.

Doggystyle, Snoop’s debut solo album, was released by Death Row Records in November 1993. It was produced by Dr. Dre and debuted at number one on both the Billboard 200 and the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts.

Snoop Lion’s 1994 short film Murder Was the Case has its own soundtrack released by Death Row Records the same year. His second studio album, 1996’s Tha Doggfather (featuring “Snoop’s Upside Ya Head” as the first single), similarly had a chart-topping debut. The next year, the record received double platinum status from the Recording Industry Association of America.

After leaving Death Row Records in January 1998, Snoop joined with No Limit Records and put out three albums: Da Game is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told (1998),  In 2002, he released Be da Boss with Paid Tha Fee after signing with Priority/Capitol/EMI Records. When he finally joined with Geffen Records in 2004, he promptly dropped three more albums: R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece, Tha Blue Carpet Treatment, and Ego Trippin’.

His debut album, Malice’n Wonderland, was released by Priority Records in 2009, and his sophomore effort, Doggumentary, was released in 2011. His thirteenth studio album, titled Bush, was released in May of 2015, heralding the revival of the Snoop Dogg label.

Snoop has been nominated for a Grammy a total of 17 times, but he has yet to take home the trophy.  In 2018, Snoop said that he was “a born-again Christian,” and he followed that up with his first gospel album, Bible of Love.

As of the 19th of November, 2018, Snoop declared himself to be “a born-again Christian.” Because of his early fascination with and resemblance to the Peanuts character, “Snoopy,” his parents gave him the moniker. They had three sons, and he was the middle one. His parents split up in 1975. His stepfather was his mother’s new husband. Broadus began his musical career at a young age, when he began singing and playing the piano at the Golgotha Trinity Baptist Church.

In sixth grade, he decided to start rapping. At a young age, Broadus helped support his family by selling candies, delivering newspapers, and bagging groceries. A student and a churchgoer who enjoyed both sports and singing in the choir, this man was highly regarded by everyone who knew him. Broadus stated in 1993 that he began engaging in illegal behavior and joining gangs as a teenager despite his mother’s best efforts to keep him out of trouble.

Broadus was known to frequently rap in class. He reflected on how his rapping in the school halls would attract such a large audience that the principal may worry that a fight was breaking out. It helped me recognize my talent for the first time. I could sense that people were paying attention to my raps, and that piqued my own curiosity.

As a young man, Broadus frequently ran afoul of the law. Despite contradicting the consistent police and media claims from 1993, he was a member of the Rollin’ 20s Crips gang in Long Beach’s Eastside area. After graduating from Long Beach Polytechnic High School in 1989, he was arrested for possession of cocaine and spent the following three years in jail. Snoop did a solo freestyle over En Vogue’s “Hold On” for an early mixtape, and the sample intrigued Dr. Dre so much that he invited Snoop in for an audition.

He learned how to structure his songs and divide his subjects into lines, hooks, and choruses from the D.O.C., a former member of the N.W.A. When Broadus began making music, he adopted the alias Snoop Doggy Dogg. After working together on the Deep Cover theme song in 1992, Dr. Dre invited him to appear on his first solo album, The Chronic, along with the rest of his former group, Tha Dogg Pound. Since Snoop Dogg’s debut album, Doggystyle, was so well received by critics and fans alike, this widespread promotion undoubtedly helped its popularity.

Snoop Dogg, an often-cited example of a violent and misogynistic musician, was a focal point of calls to prohibit gangsta rap. A Rolling Stone music critic named Touré noted that Snoop’s vocal delivery was softer than that of many other rappers, writing, “Snoop’s vocal approach is part of what differentiates him: when many rappers yell, figuratively and literally, he talks softly.” Many rappers from the Death Row label were featured on Doggystyle, including Daz Dillinger, Kurupt, and Nate.

A short film, Murder Was the Case, detailing Snoop Dogg’s murder trial and released in 1994 with an original score. Snoop Dogg’s record label, Doggy Style Records, Inc., was incorporated in California on July 6, 1995 under company registration number C19231399.

After being tried for murder, Broadus was exonerated on February 20th, 1996. Broadus claims that he abandoned the “gangsta” lifestyle after being acquitted because he feared for his safety and for a possible prison sentence.

He worked with fellow rap artist Tupac Shakur on the albums “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted” and “2 of Amerikaz Mostost Albums.” Shakur recorded this while he was still alive; he was shot in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996, and died six days later.

Snoop Dogg, a rapper from the West Coast, has gone a long way since Dr. Dre discovered him in the early 1990s. When he first debuted on Dr. Dre’s The Chronic in 1992, nobody could have imagined that it would be the beginning of a career that would take him all over the world, sell millions of records, and even act in movies and television shows.

Snoop Dogg, whose real name is Cordozar Calvin Broadus Jr., is an immensely popular rapper. His mom thought he looked like Snoopy from the Peanuts cartoon, so she gave him that name. The musically-inclined adolescent had been singing and playing the piano at his local Baptist church since the age of 10.

After finishing high school, Snoop went to prison several times for drug offenses. On top of all that, he was a member of the notorious Rollin’ 20 Crips gang. As a means of relieving stress, he started writing music and, along with his cousin Nate Dogg and friend Warren G, released early tracks under the moniker 213.

After hearing a recording of Snoop rapping under the moniker Snoop Doggy Dogg on one of these, Dr. Dre suggested that he try out for a role. With their collaboration on “Deep Cover” from the film’s soundtrack, Snoop quickly rose to prominence as a rapper on Dr. Dre’s massively successful 1992 debut solo album The Chronic.

Cypress Hill’s B-Real reflected back on how it expanded upon the G-Funk foundation laid by The Chronic, saying, “I suppose Dr. Dre gave Snoop Dogg the idea.” It solidified Snoop Dogg’s place in pop culture lore.

The soundtrack to the short film Murder Was the Case also achieved quadruple platinum status. Tha Doggfather (1996), Snoop’s follow-up album, also debuted at #1, despite the fact that Dre had left Death Row over a contract dispute. It didn’t sell as well, but it proved that Snoop belonged in the big leagues of music anyhow.

Snoop left Suge Knight and Death Row Records to sign with Master P and his No Limit Records. Success on the hip-hop charts followed with both of his subsequent albums, Da Game Is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told (1998) and No Limit Top Dogg (2001). (1999). His final album with No Limit, 2000’s The Last Meal, sold over 2 million copies. His style shifted from “gangsta rap” to something gentler over time.
