Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy is a Northern Irish golfer (born May 4, 1989, in Holywood) who rose to prominence quite quickly. When he turned 23, he was already the best golfer in the world, having won two of the four major championships.

McIlroy’s father first introduced him to the game, and as the youngster showed early promise as a golfer, his parents took on extra work to pay for his development. By the time he was two years old, McIlroy was able to hit drives of 40 yards with his little clubs, and by the time he was nine, he had made his first ace. Having joined the Holywood Golf Club in Northern Ireland at age seven, he went to Miami at age nine to win the Doral Junior Under-10 World Championship.

Before he won the European Amateur Championship by three strokes in Milan in 2006, McIlroy enjoyed a lot of success as an amateur on the Irish and British levels. He was consequently invited to play in the 2007 British Open, one of golf’s four major events, where he ended as the tournament’s low amateur and thus received silver. McIlroy turned professional in 2007 at the age of 18, while he was the world’s finest amateur golfer. As the youngest and quickest golfer in history to gain a European Tour card, he became a full member in 2008.

McIlroy won the Dubai Desert Classic in Europe in 2009 and the Wells Fargo Championship in the United States in 2010 with a final-round score of 62, which tied the tournament record. The first three rounds of the 2011 Masters Tournament went incredibly well for him, but then tragedy struck. His final-round 80 was the worst score ever posted by a leader after three rounds at the Masters, and he lost by four shots. He finished the event tied for the 15th. McIlroy went on to win his first major event at the U.S. Open by eight strokes two months later. As his second major championship, the PGA Championship was his to claim in 2012.

McIlroy didn’t have a good 2013 because he didn’t win a tournament on the PGA Tour or the European Tour. By dominating the 2014 British Open from start to finish, he was able to secure his third career major title. With his stellar play continuing, he took down Phil Mickelson in a thrilling final major of the year and won by a single stroke. This year’s Players Championship victory was McIlroy’s 15th overall on the PGA Tour. In both 2015 and 2016, he won a pair of circuit events. Additionally, throughout this time period, he won the Ryder Cup four times.

Since 1927, professional golfers have met every other year to participate in the Ryder Cup. When the British team expanded to include golfers from Ireland (1973) and the rest of Europe, the competition was no longer just between Britain and the United States (1979).

British seed merchant Samuel Ryder donated the trophy for an annual golf event held in alternating British and American locations. All of the top golfers on both squads were handpicked by their official organizations.

In the 20th century, the game experienced a meteoric rise to prominence around the world after having been virtually unknown prior to that era. Golf’s origin may be traced back to the lush green grass and unspoiled dangers of Scotland’s coastline links. It is unclear where in mainland Europe the game’s greatest popularity lay at the time. It wasn’t until later in golf’s history that the game was played on downs, moorland, and parkland courses. From friendly matches to televised professional tournaments, golf is played at a wide range of skill levels. Despite golf’s tremendous appeal, few people actually have what it takes to play the game at a professional level.

The origins of golf are a contentious topic. Modern baseball may have evolved from the ancient Roman game of paganica, which was played with a bent staff and a leather ball stuffed with wool or feathers. It is hypothesized that the Roman conquest of much of Europe in the 1st century BC led to the evolution of modern-day Paganica. However, some argue that it evolved from chuiwan (ch’i-wan), a traditional Chinese game played with a stick and ball during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). Chuiwan was most likely introduced to Europe by merchants in the Middle Ages. When examined closely, both of these possibilities crumble.

One such early stick-and-ball game is the English version of cambuca (a term of Celtic origin). Popular in France, Chabot may have shared ancestry with the sports of hurling in Ireland and shinty in Scotland (also known as camanachd), as well as the French pleasure, jeu de mail (which was borrowed from an Italian game). The Germans and the English were the next to hear about it (where it was dubbed pall-mall, pronounced “pell mell”). As reported by English explorer William Ousley in 1819, chaugán, the national game of Persia and the ancestor of modern polo, is the ancestor of golf.

Later historians suggested that the French cross-country game chicane descended from chaugán due to the similarity in their names. Chicane’s objective was to get the ball as close to a garden or religious building’s entrance as possible. Chole is the name that writers Émile Zola and Charles Deulin gave to this pastime in their books.

Chicane was remarkably similar to what Dutch golf historian J.H. van Hengel considers to be the game’s earliest iteration. Tradition and history abound in the game of golf. In 1297, the year that witnessed the capture of the individual responsible for the killing of Floris V, count of Holland and Zeeland, the citizens of the Dutch village of Loenen allegedly began performing it annually to commemorate the event. However, this extremely ancient date is unsupported by evidence, giving the impression that it is an anachronism.

Golf first appeared sometime during the 14th and 15th centuries, as evidenced by the available facts. The game may be considered a domesticated form of medieval games like a football due to the extreme reduction in the size of the goals and the ball, which forced the element of aggressiveness to give way to the element of skill. To paraphrase German sociologist Norbert Elias, “golf is the result of civilization,” if viewed from this angle.

One, there is a growing body of photographic evidence showing continental Europe was the birthplace of golf. Adelaide, Duchess of Burgundy, previously held this miniature, which was taken from a book of hours. Written and sketched sometime in the 15th century, it predates even the earliest of the Scottish sources given above.

The miniature in Adelaide’s book is an early version of the one in the British Library’s famous book of hours, which has been variously attributed to the studios of two Flemish artists: Simon Bening and Gerard Horenbout, both of whom were active in the Ghent-Bruges school in the first half of the 16th century. The hour book of Philip I, son of Emperor Maximilian I, also features miniatures. Made a year before Philip’s untimely demise, this 1505 painting depicts golfers at work on the course.

Golf-themed engravings are included in some books of hours. Some people can be seen playing sports like football and golf in the margins of a picture of an embracing pair with Venus and Cupid in Pieter Janszoon Saenredam’s Venus, Protectress of Lovers, and in Pieter van der Borcht’s Playing Monkeys, a monkey smashes a teed ball. The latter was inspired by an engraving by Hendrik Goltzius and was created as a facsimile.

In two paintings dated 1680 and 1746–47, we see what are likely the earliest depictions of golf being played in Scotland. An earlier oil painting depicted a foursome of gentlemen and two caddies playing golf in St. Andrews. The second, by Englishman Paul Sandby, is a watercolour of a golf ball war between a group of troops near Edinburgh Castle.

The ambiguity surrounding the definition of “golf” in 15th-century Scotland is at the heart of the problem with the Scottish acts of parliament. British historian Eric Midwinter made similar arguments on the origins of cricket, arguing that a textual reference to a game cannot show the game’s provenance unless the context and the meaning of the reference are known.

The magistrate of Brussels passed an ordinance in 1360 that made it illegal to play a game with a club and ball or face a fine of 20 shillings or the forfeiture of one’s upper garment. It’s possible that the Scots borrowed the name golf from the phrase met column (dative plural of solving; golf is a version of this word), but the verb stollen makes it quite obvious that the author had in mind the harsh, competitive team game of Soule played with a curved stick.
