Richard Dreyfuss

Richard Stephen Dreyfus was born to Geraldine and Norman Dreyfus on October 29, 1947, in Brooklyn, New York. His mother was a campaigner for world peace, while his father ran a law firm and a restaurant. As a child, Dreyfus identified as Jewish and was educated in a Jewish household. His dad hated New York, so they ended up moving to Europe and then Los Angeles. During his formative years, young Dreyfus attended Beverly Hills High School. Richard Dreyfus is a legendary American actor who has been active in the industry for over 50 years and continues to receive praise for his many performances.

Dreyfus had an early introduction to acting, despite not being from a media background. He began performing on stage at age fifteen and made his film debut the following year, at age twenty. Dreyfus had a great beginning, in contrast to the majority of actors who have a difficult time recognizing their own potential. His performance in American Grafitti earned him a Golden Globe nomination in 1973.

After that, this brilliant actor continued to deliver hit after hit, earning Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA statuettes for his work in films like “Jaws,” “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” and “The Goodbye Girl.” Dreyfus’s career was severely stunted by his drug use in the first half of the 1980s, but he made a triumphant comeback. The 1986 album “Down and Out in Beverly Hills” marked his return to the music scene. Dreyfus has recently been seen in the ‘Madoff’ television series.

Dreyfus’s acting career got off to a quick start. Dreyfus made his first TV appearance in “In Mama’s House” at the tender age of 15. Then, he spent a year at what was then San Fernando Valley State College which is now California State University. Dreyfus was a clerk in a hospital in Los Angeles during the Vietnam War. Upon his return to acting, he appeared in numerous television episodes, including Peyton Place, Gidget, That Girl, Bewitched, and The Big Valley.

In the 1967 picture The Graduate, Drefus had his first cinematic appearance in an uncredited bit part. The following film he appeared in was Valley of the Dolls, in which he played a similarly minor role. As a performer, Dreyfus was active in the late 1960s and early 1970s, appearing in Broadway, Off-Broadway, repertory, and improvised performances. In the play “The Time of Your Life,” he appeared alongside Henry Fonda, Gloria Grahame, Ron Thompson, Strother Martin, Jane Alexander, Lewis J. Stadlen, Richard X. Slattery, and Pepper Martin.

An important part for Dreyfus is the 1973 film American Graffiti. With Harrison Ford and Ron Howard, the film was a smashing success, and he had a key supporting role. The Canadian film “The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz,” in which Dreyfuss starred, was released in 1974. Both audiences and reviews seemed to enjoy the flick. Dreyfus’ acting skills were recognized and lauded. Dreyfus’s professional life flourished in 1975. He was the main attraction of Steven Spielberg’s massively successful film, “Jaws.” The movie helped launch Dreyfus’ career as a leading man.

In Spielberg’s ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind,’ starring Dreyfus once again, Dreyfus and the director found critical and commercial success. In the end, the movie was a huge success and one of the largest of the decade. In the same year, he was also seen in “The Goodbye Girl,” in which he played the love protagonist. He performed the part of a struggling actor so convincingly that he won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1978. This made him the youngest actor in the award’s history. It took Adrian Brody until 2003 to break his record, which he held for 25 years.

Following the success of ‘The Goodbye Girl,’ in 1978, Dreyfus produced and appeared in the film ‘The Big Fix. Dreyfus’s cocaine abuse likely started around this time. He was addicted to drugs for a good portion of the 1980s. He was caught with drugs in 1982 and subsequently arrested. The majority of his flicks during that era tanked at the box office.

Dreyfus checked into a rehabilitation facility towards the middle of the 1980s. In the 1986 Paul Mazursky picture “Down and Out in Beverly Hills,” he made a return opposite Bette Midler and Nick Nolte. In the same year, he played the lead in Rob Reiner’s ‘Stand By Me,’ a coming-of-age comedy-drama based on Stephen King’s novel The Body. Dreyfus’s 1987 filmography included the leading roles in Stakeout, Nuts, and Tin Men. The next year, for the romantic comedy “Moon Over Parador,” he teamed up with director Paul Mazursky once more.

Dreyfus made his mark as a charismatic leading man in the latter stages of his career. In the 1989 picture Always, he starred alongside Holly Hunter and director Steven Spielberg for the second time. In this case, the original film was remade. Beginning in the 1990s with the movies “Postcards from the Edge” and “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead,” he was a major force in the industry. He has a supporting role in the 1991 romantic comedy Once Around. In the same year, he had a leading role in “What About Bob,” a comedy directed by Bill Murray. He portrayed an obsessed new patient who drives a psychiatrist mad in the film. This year he capped it off by producing and starring in the film Prisoner of Honor.

Claims a life-changing vision he saw in the hospital following a terrible automobile wreck was largely responsible for his success in beating drug addiction. Dreyfuss, who had been high at the time of the incident, accepted responsibility for it. Even though he was the only one hurt, the sight of a young girl in a white dress affected him while he was in his recuperation phase. He credits the girl with motivating him to save his own life by addressing his drug issues, as she served as a reminder of the kind of innocent life he could have ruined.

While in London for The Producers in November 2004, he dropped out a week before opening. The media pointed out that Dreyfuss’s performance as Max Bialystock is physically taxing and that he was still experiencing pain from his herniated disc surgery in January. Dreyfuss was accruing injuries, according to both him and his production assistant, so he had to use physical therapy support even during rehearsals. At some point during filming, Dreyfuss was let go. In 2009, he made his way to the West End, where he performed at The Old Vic. When he declared his retirement from film acting in 2004, it was to focus on the stage. He seemed to imply that he chose this path since he hasn’t had much of an opportunity to work in cinema recently and that he has always considered theater to be his true calling.
