Harry’s parents divorced in 1996. His mother was killed in a car accident in Paris the following year. At the time, Harry and William were staying at Balmoral with their father, and the Prince of Wales informed them of their mother’s death. At his mother’s funeral, Harry, then 12, walked behind the funeral cortège from Kensington Palace to Westminster Abbey, alongside his father, brother, paternal grandfather, and maternal uncle, Earl Spencer.

In a 2017 interview with The Daily Telegraph, the Prince admitted that he sought counseling after two years of “total chaos” as he struggled to come to terms with his mother’s death. Education Harry, like his father and brother, attended independent schools.

He began his education at Jane Mynors’ nursery school in London, followed by the pre-preparatory Wetherby School. Following that, he attended Ludgrove School. He was accepted to Eton College after passing the entrance exams. The decision to send Harry to Eton went against the Windsor family tradition of sending children to Gordonstoun, where Harry’s grandfather, father, two uncles, and two cousins had all attended.

It was announced in 2006 that Harry’s unit would be deployed to Iraq the following year. There was a public debate about whether he should serve there. Harry had made it clear that if he passed the rigorous Apache training course, he intended to fly Apache attack helicopters.

This would enable him to return to active military service on the frontlines of Afghanistan. Harry passed his Apache flying test on March 10, 2011, and was awarded his Apache Flying Badge on April 14, 2011. He was expected to return to Afghanistan before the withdrawal in 2015. In June 2011, Clarence House announced that, upon completion of his training conversion course to use Apache helicopters in combat, Harry would be available for deployment as an Apache helicopter pilot, including current operations in Afghanistan. The final decision was made by the Ministry of Defence’s senior commanders, including the Chief of the Defence Staff, after consulting with Harry, the Prince of Wales, and the Queen.

He was transferred to a US military base in California in October to complete his helicopter gunship training. This final phase of training included live-fire training as well as “environmental and judgement training” at naval and air force bases in California and Arizona. The majority of those who completed the two-month Apache training were sent to the front lines in Afghanistan.

In the same month, it was reported that Harry was a natural pilot who had risen to the top of his class during his extensive training at the Naval Air Facility in El Centro, California. Harry returned to England in November 2011. He went to Wattisham Airfield in Suffolk, in the east of England, to finish his Apache helicopter training.

Harry arrived at Camp Bastion in southern Afghanistan on September 7, 2012, as part of the 100-man 662 Squadron, 3 Regiment, Army Air Corpsto begin a four-month combat tour as a co-pilot and gunner for an Apache helicopter.  On the 10th of September, just days after his arrival in Afghanistan, it was reported that the Taliban had threatened his life.
