The New York Jets, an NFL franchise based in Florham Park, New Jersey, are an American professional gridiron football team. Joe Namath, a future Hall of Fame quarterback, led the New York Jets to a Super Bowl victory over the Baltimore Colts in 1969. In East Rutherford, New Jersey, the Jets, and the New York Giants play at the same stadium.

While competing with the more established Giants franchise in the New York market, the Titans, who joined the fledgling American Football League in 1960 but didn’t change their name to reflect the new league until 1963, struggled financially and had middling results on the field. Don Maynard, who joined the team in its inaugural season and went on to set most major receiving records throughout his Hall of Fame career, was one of the few bright lights in the early years.

The acquisition of Namath in 1965 and the hiring of Weeb Ewbank as head coach in 1963 were the first steps toward the Jets’ rise to respectability. The famous quarterback’s excellent looks and late-night partying earned him fan worship and product endorsements, earning him the nickname “Broadway Joe.” In the week leading up to the 1969 Super Bowl, Namath’s cockiness was on full show as he confidently predicted a win for the Jets over the strongly favored Colts of the NFL, the superior professional football league that had already won the first two Super Bowls. Namath’s prediction came true as the Jets beat the Colts, 16-7. The Jets’ triumph demonstrated the parity between the leagues, which helped assuage the fears of NFL and AFL owners before their merger in 1970.

After a protracted playoff drought that started in 1970, Namath was released in 1977. The Jets made a return to the postseason in 1981 thanks to a formidable defensive line known as the “New York Sack Exchange,” and they went all the way to the AFC title game the following season. Although the Jets enjoyed brief periods of success during the rest of the 1980s and the first half of the 1990s, their longest sustained run of success began in 1998. The Jets, headed by coach Bill Parcells, and star running back Curtis Martin and wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson, completed their season with a loss to the Denver Broncos in the 1999 AFC championship game. Although they made the playoffs in four of the next eight years, the Jets were never a serious contender in the American Football Conference.

The Jets tried to turn their fortunes around by acquiring former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre in the summer of 2008. However, when the team finished 9-7, which was not good enough to make the playoffs, Favre was released and a new coaching staff was hired.

The Jets repeated their first-round and second-round playoff road upset victory the following year but ultimately fell short against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC title game. Success for the Jets dwindled in the next year, as they finished with a losing record in 2012. After two more unsuccessful years, the squad finally parted ways with Ryan and its general manager in 2014. Even though they improved to 10 wins in 2015, New York was still left out of the playoffs. In 2016, the team once again finished last in their conference.

The NFL and the American Football League merged in 1966, leading to the development of the modern game. Although the merger was not officially completed until 1970, the first championship game was played on January 15, 1967, at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and was known as the AFL-NFL World Championship Game. The Green Bay Packers of the National Football League defeated the Kansas City Chiefs of the American Football League  35-10 in a game that aired on two television networks but was not a sellout. Since the championship game is always held in a different year than the season it culminates in, Roman numerals have been used to denote each Super Bowl since its inception in 1969.

Super Bowl Sunday has become a de facto national holiday, celebrated with watch parties in living rooms, bars, and restaurants across the United States. There is a festival-like atmosphere in the host city and a massive media buildup in the days leading up to the game. There are also extravagant rituals and performances during halftime and before the game.

Since the very first game, every Super Bowl has been a huge financial success and a rating phenomenon on television, with many of the games ranking among the most-watched sporting events ever. The cost of airing a commercial during the Super Bowl is the most it will be all year; in 2016, a 30-second spot fetched around $4.8 million. Famous actors and directors, as well as cutting-edge technologies, have been included in these high-profile commercials aimed at the massive Super Bowl viewership. Since the 1980s, Super Bowl commercials have received almost as much attention from the media and the general public as the game itself.

As long as there have been humans, there has been a desire to kick a spherical object. Acting on this need, two or more people kicked a round object in competition with each other, hoping to send it flying in one direction rather than the other. This was the first football game. Historical records show that organized football games were played in both Greece and China over two thousand years ago, but scholars have been unable to determine the rules of these games. Although it’s possible that football-like games were played across the Roman Empire, the game of harpastum, which is frequently cited in support of these assertions, appears to have involved throwing a ball rather than kicking it. Although kicking games were played by indigenous North Americans, they were not as common as the stickball games that evolved into contemporary lacrosse.

Folk football games in the 14th and 15th centuries, typically performed at Shrovetide or Easter, may have originated in pagan fertility ceremonies commemorating the return of spring. Both of these events were quite chaotic. Men, women, and children of all ages, social classes, and religious affiliations participated in inter-village competitions that involved kicking, throwing, and carrying a wooden or leather ball (or inflated animal bladder) across fields, over streams, through narrow gateways, and down even narrower streets. An especially strong or skilled villager finally sent the ball through the portal of the rival village’s parish church, ending the tumultuous contest. The separation of folk football’s original villagers into married and unmarried teams shows the game’s roots in a fertility rite.

Sir Thomas Elyot’s criticism of British folk football in The Governor suggests that the sport did not become noticeably more civilized with the advent of the Renaissance. He was disappointed in the “beastly rage and excessive brutality” of the games. Not even King James I, who fought for the rights of Puritan-banned English customs, wanted his subjects to play folk football. The “rough and violent” game was “meeter for maiming than making able the thereof,” he said in Basilikon Doron; or, His Majesties Instructions to His Dearest Sonne, Henry the Prince.

The rough-and-tumble sport of folk football was turned into Calcio, a game popular among trendy young aristocracy during the Renaissance in Italy. The game was played on restricted rectangular grounds put out in urban squares like Florence’s Piazza di Santa Croce. Giovanni Bardi recommended that participants be “gentlemen, from eighteen years of age to forty-five, lovely and vigorous, of gallant bearing and of good record” in his Discorso Sopra il Gioco del Calcio Fiorentino. Dressing in “goodly raiment” was mandatory. Pikemen in uniform stand guard and maintain order in a modern print.

Until the early 20th century, forms of folk football were played in France and Britain in towns like Boulogne-la-Grande and Ashbourne as part of a more or less uninterrupted local heritage. Although all forms of modern football may be traced back to medieval folk football, their ancestry can be traced more directly to games played in schoolyards than on village greens or open fields. Thomas Gray spoke of the “flying ball” and the “fearful thrill” it brought to the “idle progeny” of England’s aristocracy in his “Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College” in 1747.

Football was played in a manner nearly as violent as the medieval version of the game in the late 18th and early 19th century at public schools such as Eton, Harrow, Shrewsbury, and Winchester. The affluent students who graduated from these schools were hesitant to give up their “fearful joy” when they attended universities like Oxford and Cambridge. The only reasonable answer, given that nobody was willing to play by the rules of another school, was for them to make up new games that combined elements from other schools’ norms.

J. Curtis Sanford, a wealthy Texan oilman, is credited with creating the Cotton Bowl. In 1937, the inaugural game was held. Following the 1940 contest, a group of Dallas residents took over the game and renamed it the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association; by the end of that year, they had become an affiliate of the Southwest Conference. Before the Southwest Conference collapsed in 1996, this bowl game was the only one that had been organized and run by a single sports conference.

In the 1990s, the Cotton Bowl lost its standing as one of the four most prestigious bowl games when the Fiesta Bowl was added to the College Bowl Coalition and later the Bowl Championship Series. In 2014, it returned to prominence as one of the best bowl games in the country thanks to its inclusion in the six-bowl rotation to host the semifinals of the College Football Playoff.
