The professional Development Tyson, who was only 20 at the time, turned Trevor Berbick into jelly to win the WBC Heavyweight Championship. Berbick was knocked out in the second round by a Tyson shot, who attempted to rise repeatedly only to fall back to the canvas. Tyson’s dominance grew as the calibre of his opponents improved. With victories over Bonecrusher Smith and Tony Tucker, he unified the belts while annihilating good fighters like Pinklon Thomas, an ageing Larry Holmes, and gold medalist Tyrell Biggs.

These victories qualified him for a megafight against Linear Heavyweight Champion Michael Spinks, who many considered to be the “real” champion. Tyson put an end to that debate with a 91-second knockout that ranks among the most vicious and one-sided victories ever for a fight between two great fighters. It was Tyson’s signature victory. He maintained his dominance, but it was clear that Tyson was fraying around the edges.

In what was perceived as an egregious breach of loyalty, he quickly separated himself from his old camp. His marriage to Robin Givens was falling apart, and we started hearing bad things about the World Heavyweight Champion. By the time he stepped into the ring against Buster Douglas in Tokyo, he had lost his hoxing style as well as his controversial behaviour both inside and outside the ring.

Tyson, also known as “Kid Dynamite Mike” and “The Baddest Man on the Planet,” won his first 19 professional fights by knockout, 12 of which came in the first round. In the late 1980s, he unified the belts in the splintered heavyweight division to become the undisputed world heavyweight champion.

Tyson was convicted of raping Desiree Washington in 1992 and sentenced to six years in prison, but he was released after three years. Following his release, he fought in a series of rematches. He won the WBC and WBA titles in 1996 after knocking out Frank Bruno and Bruce Seldon.

Tyson lost his WBA title to Evander Holyfield in November 1996 by an 11th round TKO after losing the WBC title. Tyson was disqualified from their rematch in 1997 after biting off part of Holyfield’s ear.

Tyson fought for the world heavyweight title at the age of 35 in 2002 but was knocked out by Lennox Lewis. After being knocked out in consecutive fights against Danny Williams and Kevin McBride, he retired from professional boxing in 2006. Tyson was well-known throughout his career for his ferocious and intimidating boxing style, as well as his controversial behaviour both inside and outside the ring.
