Davis won a major antitrust lawsuit against the NFL in 1982, allowing the Raiders to move after the NFL first opposed the move. In their first four years in Los Angeles, the team was extremely successful, winning the Super Bowl again in 1984 and clinching a postseason berth in each of those years. Rice, along with quarterback Joe Montana and defensive back Ronnie Lott, became virtually synonymous with the 49ers due to their roles in the team’s three Super Bowl victories. He established a number of Super Bowl records and was voted the game’s Most Valuable Player in Super Bowl XXIII (1988). Each year from 1986 to 1998, Rice was selected for the Pro Bowl. The 49ers sent Rice to the Oakland Raiders in a contentious move to help nurture younger players before the 2001 season.
The next year, he led the Raiders to Super Bowl XXXVII, where they were defeated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and became the first player in NFL history with over 200 career touchdowns. The year 2003 marked his 13th year as a Pro Bowl participant. After being traded to the Seattle Seahawks in the middle of the 2004 season, Rice was eventually cut loose by the club. After failing to break into the starting lineup as a receiver with the Denver Broncos the next season, he signed a one-day deal with the 49ers for a ceremonial game and then retired from the NFL as a member of the team. To honor his achievements on the field, Jerry Rice entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2010.
A favorite of the television cameras as he patrolled the Raiders’ sideline, Gruden’s frequent violent outbursts paired with his still-boyish attractive features gave him the nickname “Chucky,” after a wicked murderous doll featured in the Child’s Play series of horror films. Gruden led Oakland to division titles in 2000 and 2001, and in his first four seasons as head coach, the Raiders went 40-28.
After his contract with the Raiders expired at the end of the 2002 season, Gruden made it known that he felt underappreciated and underpaid by owner Al Davis despite his on-field successes. Coincidentally, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers let go of coach Tony Dungy about the same time, and in February 2002, the team made a strange trade with the Oakland Raiders to acquire Gruden in exchange for $8 million and four draft picks. Gruden coached the Buccaneers to a 48-21 victory against the Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII.
The two years that followed were his first as head coach, and they ended in losses, but in 2005, Tampa Bay came back to win their division. After the 2007 season, Gruden faced even more criticism from the Tampa media after the Buccaneers lost their first-round playoff game at home, a humiliating feat they repeated after the 2006 season. In 2008, the Buccaneers had a promising start to the season, winning nine of their first twelve games.
