Born Kevin Michael Costner on January 18, 1955, in Lynwood, California, U.S., Kevin Costner is a well-known American film actor and director.

After receiving his business degree from California State University, Fullerton in 1978, Costner decided to pursue acting after a life-changing encounter with actor Richard Burton on an aircraft. The Big Chill (1983) was the film that launched the careers of a number of young performers, but Kevin Costner had his portions removed; the film’s director, Lawrence Kasdan, later cast him in the western Silverado (1985). It was in The Untouchables that Costner made his name in the iconic role of Eliot Ness (1987). In 1989, he started his own production firm after becoming a popular leading actor thanks to his roles in the baseball films Bull Durham (1988) and Field of Dreams (1989).

Dances with Wolves, about a Confederate soldier who learns to live with the Sioux, was a huge success for Costner and his team in 1990. It was nominated for best picture and best director, both of which Costner took home for this film. Costner played the dogged district attorney Jim Garrison in Oliver Stone’s JFK and acted opposite Whitney Houston in the romantic comedy The Bodyguard, all after assuming the titular role in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Later in the 1990s, he appeared in films such as Clint Eastwood’s A Perfect World (1993), the apocalyptic Waterworld, and the sports-themed Tin Cup and For Love of the Game.

Early in the new millennium, Costner directed and starred in his third picture, the western Open Range. His filmography includes the Cuban missile crisis drama Thirteen Days, the comedy-drama Upside of Anger, the political thriller Swing Vote (2008), and the action film The Guardian. The next year, in 2012, Costner starred as patriarch Clarence Hatfield in the TV miniseries Hatfields & McCoys, for which he was nominated for and ultimately won an Emmy. In 2013, he made a return to the big screen as Clark Kent’s adoptive father in the Superman reboot film Man of Steel. In 2014, Costner played multiple roles, including an experienced CIA operative in the thriller Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, a spy juggling work and family in 3 Days to Kill, an NFL general manager in Draft Day, and a single man struggling to raise his mixed granddaughter in Black or White. The next year, he excelled as the head cross-country coach at McFarland High School in the United States.

Costner portrayed Molly Bloom’s estranged father in the 2017 movie Molly’s Game, about the famed poker player’s arrest for her role in an illegal, high-stakes poker operation frequented by A-list celebrities. Then, in Yellowstone, he played the patriarch of a Montana rancher family on television (2018– ).

Netflix’s The Highwaymen (2019) starred Costner as a veteran Texas Ranger on the hunt for Bonnie and Clyde. After a brief stay in Fort Hays, Kansas, he is sent to the army’s farthest outpost, Fort Sedgewick, by the erratic Major Fambrough (Maury Chaykin). Dunbar arrives at the outpost to discover that it has been abandoned and is in disarray, but he decides to remain there anyhow. He begins work on repairing the fort and records his progress in a journal. On the way, he finds a white woman dressed as a Sioux who is seriously injured and bleeding; he decides to take her to the tribe for help. Kicking Bird convinces the apprehensive Indians not to assault Dunbar. After finishing his business degree at California State University, Fullerton, Kevin Costner decided to pursue a career in acting, but he went into marketing instead. Costner began taking acting classes and working odd jobs to support his family after a chance meeting with actor Richard Burton inspired him to take acting seriously as a career option. His breakthrough role occurred in 1987’s The Untouchables after he had appeared in cameos and small roles in a number of films beforehand. He eventually become one of the most recognizable actors in history.

After that, he established himself as a starring actor with a string of iconic turns in films like No Way Out, Bull Durham, and Field of Dreams. Later, with the epic Western battle film Dances with Wolves, for which he won both the Best Picture and Best Director Oscars, he solidified his reputation as an accomplished filmmaker and producer.

In the womb, he was welcomed into the world by William Costner, an electrician who later became an executive for a utility business, and Sharon Rae Costner, a social worker. Kevin is the youngest of three brothers, the others being Daniel Craig Costner and Mark Douglas Costner, both of whom he was raised alongside. In his family, Kevin was the baby. Kevin Costner went to both Buena High and Villa Park High but was never particularly engaged in his studies. In addition to playing the piano and composing poetry, he participated in the First Baptist Choir.

In 1978, he received a bachelor’s degree in marketing and finance from California State University, Fullerton (CSUF). In addition, throughout his stay at the university, he was an integral part of the Delta Chi fraternity. He always wanted to be an actor, but after he married Cindy, he decided to focus on his work in marketing instead. Meeting actor Richard Burton on the flight back from their honeymoon sparked an interest in a future in show business. According to Burton’s advice, he ought to drop everything and dedicate himself fully to the film industry.

Then, with his wife’s encouragement, Costner left his marketing position and started taking acting classes five nights a week. To make ends meet as a family man and as an aspiring actor, he took odd jobs such as truck driving and guiding tourists around Hollywood. Beyond that, he piloted the Jungle Cruise at Disneyland. His most notable film role to date is as the late Alex in the 1983 film The Big Chill.

While he was still a student at the institution in 1975, he began seeing another named Cindy Silva, whom he would later marry in 1978. Their three children are named Anne Clayton, Lily McCall, and Joseph “Joe” Tedrick. The couple divorced in 1994 after being married for 16 years. He had a brief relationship with Bridget Rooney after the breakup of his first marriage, and they now share custody of their son, Liam.

He finally tied the knot with his longtime sweetheart, German-American model Christine Baumgartner, in 2004. Germany was the location of the wedding. The couple’s three amazing children, Cayden Wyatt Costner, Hayes Logan, and Grace Avery, are the pride and joy of their lives. To begin with, Costner was a staunch Republican; he even played golf frequently with former President Ronald Reagan. On the other hand, his eclectic interests led him to become a Democrat and get involved in Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign.

Given the show’s massive success, it’s safe to assume that the whole Yellowstone cast, including friends and family, watches the Paramount Network drama. The plot thickens, though, because Kevin Costner apparently would rather his wife and kids not watch the Dutton family. The fact that Kevin, 67, is married to Christine Baumgartner, 48, a former model turned handbag designer, is certainly common knowledge among fans.
