While a seventh grader at ‘Pauline Hughes Middle School,’ a teacher heard her singing in the hallway and encouraged her to join the choir. She continued her acting career at ‘Burleson High School,’ where she took part in a talent show and several musical productions. After Kelly Clarkson finished high school in 2000, she was determined to follow her musical dreams. When she had accumulated enough money by doing odd jobs, she was able to pay to record a demo. At the time, she was so sure of her musical prowess that she declined recording contracts from both Jive Records and Interscope Records.

After moving to Los Angeles in 2001, she began working as a background actress on episodes including “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch” and “Dharma & Greg.” After some time, she collaborated with songwriter Gerry Goffin to produce five demo tracks featuring her voice in the aim of securing a record deal.

The majority of US recording studios rejected her because of her “too dark” voice. She went through a terrible fire and ended up moving back to Texas, where she worked as a waitress and telemarketing. In May of 2002, Kelly Clarkson was told by her friends that she should try out for the upcoming talent program “American Idol: The Search for a Superstar.” She was crowned the first season’s winner on September 4, 2002, and given a “golden ticket” to the Hollywood rounds. Her second album, titled “Breakaway,” was released on November 30, 2004, in an effort to shed her “American Idol” persona and embrace a more rock-oriented musical approach. The album was more successful commercially than her first release, and it earned her two Grammys.

On June 22, 2007, she released her third studio album, titled My December, in which she experimented with darker themes and a heavier rock sound. However, it caused tension between her and music mogul/producer Clive Davis, who had wanted her to write songs that appealed to a wider demographic. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 thanks to her criticism of the album’s tougher topics and her collaboration with several notable vocalists. Her 2010 country duet with Jason Aldean, “Don’t You Wanna Stay,” was so successful that she decided to focus on the country for her fifth studio album. She received another “Grammy” for this album, which was a commercial and critical success. It premiered on October 21, 2011, to positive reviews and solid box office returns.
