As a stand-up comedian and writer, John Mulaney is best known for his appearances on the American sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live. He also doubles as an actor and a producer. In the American TV comedy series Mulaney, which he also created, he played a character based on himself. Due to the low ratings, the show was cancelled after only one season. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, and he had his first chance to try out for a film role when he was just seven years old.
However, he had to delay his acting career due to opposition from his parents. After completing college, he got a job as an office assistant at Comedy Central. His stints as a writer and performer on Saturday Night Live catapulted him to stardom. His work was so well received that he was shortlisted for an Emmy. He is primarily known for his stand-up comedy but has also guest-starred on series including Late Night with Conan O’Brien and The Chris Gethard Show. He has appeared in a few guest spots on TV shows, including the American comedy Difficult People.
On August 26, 1982, in Chicago, Illinois, John Edmund Mulaney entered this world. His father, Charles W. Mulaney, was a partner in a law firm and an attorney, while his mother, Ellen Mulaney, taught law at Northwestern University. He’s the third of his parents’ four kids.
As a young lad, Mulaney served as an altar boy. He had the chance to try out for the lead role in the movie Home Alone at a very young age. His parents, however, were not interested.
He attended St. Clement School and went on to earn a degree in English literature from Georgetown University. After finishing college, John Mulaney uprooted to the Big Apple to pursue a career in comedy. But for a while, he was employed as a secretary at Comedy Central. He also served as a pundit on the Best Week Ever for a while.
He eventually tried out for and was hired by Saturday Night Live’s writing staff. He stayed with the show for six years and was finally nominated for a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series due to his work. As part of the show’s creative team, he took home a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.
Soon after, he appeared on Demetri Martin’s Important Things. The first season of the sitcom debuted on Comedy Central in 2009. Each episode featured comedian Demetri Martin discussing a new topic, such as authority, control, or wealth.
The American animated comedy series Ugly Americans, on which he voiced various characters in 2010, premiered that year. The show, directed by Devin Clark, followed the adventures of a guy who travels to Manhattan, a city where humans and demons coexist. There were two seasons of the show shown, and they were both well-received. John Mulaney has made a number of other television appearances, usually as a guest star. His TV appearances include the Kroll Show, the Peter Holmes Show, and the Chris Gethard Show.
In 2014, he played a satirical version of himself in the comedy series Mulaney, which he also wrote, produced, and starred in as the show’s main character. Since the show was so poorly received, it was cancelled after only one season. Most of John Mulaney’s early fame came from the comedic series Best Week Ever. In 2004, the show went on the air, and it lasted until 2014. Comedians discussed the events of the preceding week in this Fred Graver-created series. Topics included current events, celebrity news, and pop culture.
His time spent as a writer and performer on Saturday Night Live is often regarded as his most significant professional contribution. This Lorne Michaels creation has been on the air continuously since its inception in 1975. In the United States, the show has a massive fanbase, and it is now regarded as TV Guide’s number ten all-time favourite series. For his work on the program, Mulaney has received several nominations for various accolades.
For the American parody documentary series Documentary Now!, he works as a writer, consulting producer, and co-executive producer. Since August 2015, the show has been available to watch online. Two Emmys have been nominated for it, and The New York Times named it one of the finest television shows of 2015. In 2014, John Mulaney tied the knot with cosmetician Annamarie Tendler. Six years later, they broke up. Together with TV actress Olivia Munn, he revealed they were expecting their first child in 2021. Their son Malcolm Hip Mulaney was born in December of 2021.
John Mulaney is best known for his stand-up comedy, but he is also an Emmy-winning TV writer and a humorous actor. His confident, deadpan style belies his observational humour, which mocks everyday follies along with his personal hobbies and often misguided fears. He generally performs in a suit. Beginning in 2009, the year of his Comedy Central Records debut with The Top Part, he established himself as a television writer, contributing to SNL for four consecutive seasons. In 2012, his standup CD New in Town topped the Billboard comedy album list, and he later starred in his own sitcom, Mulaney. He made his way back to SNL in 2018, but this time he was the host.

The Chicago native moved to New York to seek a career in comedy after studying English literature at Georgetown. He had been a fan of sketch and sitcom humour since he was a child. After working as an office assistant for a year at Comedy Central, he proposed the concept of a parody of VH1’s I Love the ’80s. Following that, he collaborated with Nick Kroll and Brian Donovan to create the Comedy Central series I Love the ’30s. From 2005 through 2008, the network aired new episodes of the shorts, which caught the attention of prominent writers/comedians including Mike Birbiglia and Demetri Martin, who subsequently recruited him to write for TV projects of their own.
In the summer of 2008, Mulaney tried out for the writing crew at Saturday Night Live, and he got the job. As soon as he had his first week off from the program, he took a flight to San Francisco to record his debut comedy album, The Top Part, at the Punch Line. Since its March 2009 release on Comedy Central Records, it has acquired a devoted fan base thanks to its in-depth accounts of his life, including his battles with alcohol and his fixation with the TV show Law & Order.
Mulaney, Timberlake, Seth Meyers, and Katreese Barnes all contributed to Mulaney’s first Emmy win in 2011 for their work on Timberlake’s May 21, 2011, SNL monologue. They took home the award for Best Original Score. He also developed and wrote for Stefon, a recurring role for Bill Hader, during his stint on the show. In 2012, his new special for Comedy Central, New in Town, premiered in January, and the audio version was released by Comedy Central Records. By that time, it had already established itself as a household name among comedy buffs, and it went on to top the Billboard Comedy Albums chart.

His multi-camera comedy series, Mulaney, was picked up by Fox in the fall of 2013. Like in Seinfeld, each episode began with a bit of comedy performed by Mulaney, who played a New York City-based comic. Nasim Pedrad of Saturday Night Live, Seaton Smith, Elliott Gould, and Martin Short also starred in the show before it was cancelled in 2015 after 13 episodes. In late 2015, he debuted his third stand-up special on Netflix called The Comeback Kid, which was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special.
Oh, Hello was Mulaney and Kroll’s first Broadway show, premiering in September 2016. Kroll Show centred around two characters, George St. Geegland and Gil Faizon, both middle-aged men, whom the two had previously tested at comedy clubs in the 2000s. A comedy CD based on The Comeback Kid was published on Drag City after Oh, Hello ended its run in January 2017.
Late in 2017 to April 2018, Mulaney brought his latest standup show, Kid Gorgeous, to theatres across the country before heading back to New York to host an episode of Saturday Night Live. After Conan O’Brien and Larry David, he became the third non-cast member to return as host on SNL with his appearance. The Netflix special Kid Gorgeous at Radio City, filmed during their appearance at Radio City Music Hall, debuted a month later and was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special.
In September 2018, the show was released on many platforms, also through Drag City, and it reached number two on Billboard’s comedy list. The album for his following special, John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch, peaked at number five on the charts. Starring David Byrne, André De Shields, and Jake Gyllenhaal, among others, it is a parody of classic live-action children’s television that debuted on Netflix in December 2019. Emmy nominations for Outstanding Variety Special and Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special were given to John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch, which featured original music written by composer Eli Bolin, Mulaney, and program co-writer Marika Sawyer (SNL).
Charles “Chip” Mulaney, Jr. (mother) and Ellen “Nell” Mulaney, formerly Stanton, are John’s parents (mother). Both of John’s parents are attorneys. His father is a partner in the mergers and acquisitions department of the American branch of the worldwide law firm Skadden. Ellen Mulaney, Mulaney’s mom, teaches at the Pritzker School of Law at Northwestern University. Based on research conducted by DNB Stories Africa, it has been determined that Charles and Ellen Mulaney were classmates of former U.S. President Bill Clinton at both Georgetown University and Yale Law School.
In the past, John Mulaney has been very transparent about his problems with substance abuse. He had been sober since 2005, the stand-up comedian said in an interview in 2014, but he had a relapse in 2020 that forced him to enter a Pennsylvania recovery centre in the winter. While at the rehabilitation center, he was able to rest from his duties for a while. After completing his time in rehabilitation in February 2021, Mulaney went back to work in September of that year.
