Words are the foundation of storytelling, just as words are the foundation of being a trustworthy and honorable person with integrity. I’m being promoted as a biracial actor, which puts me in a kind of middle space. Either the roles are written in a manner that is stereotypically black, or they are written in a manner that is referred to as “normal,” which is just code for white.

There is a lot of content available that is needlessly insensitive to people of different races. A character that is sassy and neck-jiving but isn’t even important to the plot is used to make a point about what is considered to be “urban” or to demonstrate blackness. I keep witnessing the same thing, and it does nothing to advance the plot in any way.

Simply said, it has the effect of vitrifying us within this outdated racial worldview. Many times as we are growing up, we are told that we are capable of accomplishing this or that; yet, if you don’t see somebody who looks like you doing it, you don’t believe that you are capable of achieving it. But I had amazing instructors, and because of them.

I wanted to be an amazing teacher. Because I am an athletic junkie, I participate in all of the celebrity all-star games, and I have made friends with a number of athletes. I always imagined that if my acting career hadn’t worked out, I’d go to either law school or medical school; to tell you the truth, I’d probably choose a law school. I am proud of the job that I have accomplished and prefer to take credit for it.

Because I am such an avid music and record collector, I often download around forty tracks every single day. When I get to watch TV, movie, or theatrical characters that I adore interacting with their families, I always find that to be extremely interesting. I’m always looking for the next comedian who will make me laugh at least a little bit so that I can take my mind off of all of the awful stuff that I have to comprehend.

My imagination, along with my youth and adolescence, were both greatly influenced by reading storybooks. As an actor, you want to be able to move your character forward into new ground, but it’s also really interesting to go backward and unpeel those layers and the interesting elements of what your character is and what informs the decisions that you make so that you can have as much meat as possible to work with.

This allows you to have as much material as possible to work with. I am really thankful and completely conscious of the fact that the vast majority of performers are currently unemployed. From working in a public school as a teacher to now being on a show like “Grey’s Anatomy,” I really enjoy what I do.

At the very least, everyone ought to have the chance to obtain a fundamental education and have the experience of believing that they are deserving of something in life. Question Bridge, both as a firm and as a project, is not only focused on the experiences of black men. This is in keeping with the aims we set for ourselves.

One of the things that makes me so enthusiastic about Question Bridge is the fact that my vision extends much beyond black males. The fact that the character I play on “Grey’s Anatomy” is a real person is one of the reasons I enjoy playing the part so much. He is not required to flaunt his race in any way, nor is he even required to bring it up in cowill be a struggle. We need it immediately.
