Although Renner initially saw acting as a distraction from his studies at the local police academy, he eventually came to appreciate the art form. Renner played a perpetrator of a domestic disturbance for a police training exercise during his second year at Modesto Junior College, earning him $50. Renner dropped out of college and relocated to San Francisco in order to pursue theatre training at the American Conservatory Theater. He subsequently relocated to Hawaii and then, in 1993, to Los Angeles.

Renner devoted himself to the Los Angeles theatre scene, starring in and co-directing the critically acclaimed “Search and Destroy.” During this time, he also worked on other projects, eventually obtaining his first film part in 1995’s National Lampoon’s Senior Trip. Renner’s portrayal of the notorious serial killer in the 2002 film Dahmer brought him widespread acclaim after a string of commercials and supporting roles in TV movies and series (2002). Renner’s performance, for which he was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award, stands out for capturing the complexity of the protagonist in a way that is both humanistic and sympathetic, and genuinely unsettling.

Director Kathryn Bigelow saw Renner’s performance as Jeffrey Dahmer in 2002 and cast him in his breakout role as Sgt. 1st Class William James in The Hurt Locker two years later (2008). Renner’s Oscar nod came thanks to his portrayal of a ruthless explosives specialist. Renner’s acting chops come from his ability to fully immerse himself in every role he’s playing.
