McAvoy was born on April 21st, 1979 in the city of Glasgow, Scotland. His parents, James, who worked as a bus driver, and Elizabeth (née Johnstone), who worked as a nurse, were his parents. After his parents had a divorce when he was 11 years old, his maternal grandparents, James and Mary, took him in and reared him in a housing estate in Drumchapel, Glasgow. James was a butcher. He attended St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School in Jordanhill, Glasgow, where he performed quite well academically and began what they called “a tiny school band with a number of friends.”

As a kid, McAvoy entertained the notion of becoming the Catholic clergy; but, when he was 16 years old, a passion for acting was kindled in him as a result of a visit to his school by actor David Hayman. Despite the fact that McAvoy enjoyed the experience of performing in Hayman’s movie The Near Room (1995), he did not really consider acting as a career option. However, he did continue to act as a member of the PACE Youth Theatre. Instead, he submitted his application to the Royal Navy, where he was subsequently accepted before receiving a second invitation to attend the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD).

He accepted the position at the RSAMD, which is now known as the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and once he received his diploma in the year 2000, he relocated to London. He had already made a couple of TV appearances by this time and continued to get a steady stream of TV and movie work until he came to the attention of the British public in 2004 playing car thief Steve McBride in the successful UK TV series Shameless (2004) and then to the rest of the world in 2005 as Mr Tumnus, the faun, in Disney’s adaptation of C. S. Lewis’s The Hobbit. He had already made a couple of TV appearances

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is the first book in C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia series (2005). In the 2006 film “The Last King of Scotland,” McAvoy played the role of a Scottish surgeon who eventually becomes the personal physician to the tyrant Idi Amin, who was portrayed by Forest Whitaker. Atonement (2007), the film adaptation of Ian McEwan’s book, was the film that launched McAvoy’s career. It was directed by Joe Wright. Since then, McAvoy has been on stage, most notably as the title character in Shakespeare’s “Macbeth,” which was directed by Jamie Lloyd. This production kicked off the inaugural Trafalgar Transformed season in London’s West End and received McAvoy a nomination for the Olivier Award for Best Actor.

McAvoy made his return to the stage at Trafalgar Studios in January 2015 to play Jack Gurney, the delusional 14th Earl of Gurney who believes he is Jesus, in the first revival of Peter Barnes’s satire ‘The Ruling Class.’ For this role, he was subsequently awarded the London Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Actor. In addition, the role earned him a nomination for the Olivier Award for Best Actor. On-screen, McAvoy has appeared as the crooked cop Bruce Robertson in the 2013 film Filth. For this performance, he was awarded the Scottish BAFTA for Best Actor, the British Independent Film Award for Best Actor, the London Critics Circle Film Award for British Actor of the Year, and the Empire Award for Best Actor. He also won the London Critics Circle Film Award for British Actor of the Year.

His most recent appearances as Professor Charles Xavier were in the films X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), and X-Men: Dark Phoenix  (2019). In the 2016 thriller Split by M. Night Shyamalan, he started portraying Kevin Wendell Crumb, better known as The Horde, a guy with a severe form of dissociative identity disorder. He maintained this portrayal in the 2017 film Glass, which is the sequel to Split (2019). In 2019, he also portrayed Bill Den Brough in the horror sequel It Chapter Two (2019), which was released in 2019.

It seems as if McAvoy and Jamie Lloyd will continue working together on a production of “Cyrano de Bergerac” in December 2019, which will take place at the Playhouse Theatre in the West End of London. In 2017, when McAvoy uploaded a photo of himself reading the screenplay while wearing a prosthetic nose, the project had already been in the works for quite some time at that point. Before falling into acting as a profession by accident, the flamboyant Glaswegian’s original career goals included serving in the military or becoming a priest.

James was 16 years old when actor and director David Hayman gave a seminar on Shakespeare at St. Thomas Aquinas school in Drumchapel. Unfortunately, several students in the class were disruptive, and Hayman ended up being heckled by the students. James thinks back and says, “I felt awful for him.” “Therefore, I stepped up to the microphone at the end and said, “Thank you very much.” That was extremely intriguing,’ and I asked him if I could make the tea if he was ever going to do another film and if I could get some job experience from him.”

According to him, it was the very first time he had ever taken such a burden upon himself, and fortunately, it was successful. After a period of four months, David phoned him up and asked if he’d be interested in trying out for a role. In the movie “The Near Room” from 1995, he played the part of Kevin, the son of a pimp. The value of giving something a go and seeing the results is a characteristic that he picked up from his mother’s side of the family. “Have a go, son” was always their mantra, and he adds that he has followed in their footsteps by doing so.

James was born on April 21, 1979, and his sister Joy was born on the same day. James’s mother, a mental nurse, was unable to cope when his builder father abandoned the family, so his grandparents raised James and his sister in a housing estate in Glasgow. They provided the child with a stable upbringing and instilled in him a strong work ethic from an early age. James kept working the early shift at Sainsbury’s bakery, where he was an apprentice confectioner, in order to save enough money to pay for his tuition at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama when a spot became available there.

At the age of 20, the ambitious went to London and immediately began participating in auditions. He was given a little role in the 2001 World War II miniseries Band of Brothers, and he also had an appearance at London’s Donmar Warehouse in the play Privates On Parade, when he was discovered by director Sam Mendes, who saw his promise. After that, he appeared on television in a number of shows, including The Inspector Linley Mysteries, Foyles War, and Children of Dune, among others. In 2003, he had roles in both the comedy Early Doors and the award-winning drama State of Play, both of which aired on television. He also appeared in the film Bright Young Things, which was directed by Stephen Fry.

The year after that, he made his debut on the big screen in the Paul Bettany picture Wimbledon and secured a part in the gritty comedy Shameless, where he received praise for his portrayal as the charming wideboy Steve. Both of these roles were in the same season. It was this part that not only made the Scotsman a household name but also brought about a relationship with his on-screen love interest Anne-Marie Duff, who has since also gone on to establish an amazing cinema and theatre career of her own.

The very secretive couple tied the knot in 2006, the same year that James was honoured with a rising star Bafta, and they agreed to never discuss their romance in the public eye again after their wedding. They remain humble in spite of their combined success, and they don’t participate in the celebrity party scene. The actor claims that he has just thrown away all invite because, “ethically speaking, I have an issue with leveraging your social life to promote your business.” On the other hand, when he’s not wowing audiences and critics with his performances on TV, he enjoys mountain climbing and cheering on the Celtic football club.

While James was appearing in both seasons of Shameless, he went through a difficult period in which he struggled with feelings of insecurity. However, with the aid of Anne-Marie and a striking performance as a young guy who is paralyzed in the low-budget film Inside I’m Dancing, he was able to make a full recovery. “I became aware of how much I enjoyed doing it and how content I was in general. And I gave up trying to resist it, “He reflects on it.

Soon after, Hollywood placed a call. James and his acting abilities were brought to the attention of people all around the world when he played the role of a faun in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe from The Chronicles of Narnia. In the film The Last King of Scotland, in which he played a fake physician to Idi Amin, he further reinforced his Hollywood credentials by bursting a blood vessel while acting out a scene in which he was tortured. This incident occurred during the making of the movie. However, he was passed up for an Oscar nomination in favor of his co-star Forest Whitaker.

The leading role in the coming-of-age drama Starter For Ten, which was released in 2006, came next. It is a testament to James’s flexibility as an actor that in the same movie (Becoming Jane), he was able to go from playing the role of the germaphobic fresher Brian to that of Jane Austen’s love interest opposite Anne Hathaway. The facial characteristics that Stephen Fry deems “nearly attractive” are those that, although not typical of a pin-up model, manage to communicate both sensitivity and masculinity.

The next year, James had a strong performance as the romantic lead in Atonement alongside Keira Knightley, which solidified his standing as a leading man and won him a nomination for a Golden Globe. James said in September 2007 that “he is my favourite role I have ever portrayed.” “I care about him a great deal. I often wish that I were him.” After appearing in a number of “serious” parts, the actor was given the opportunity to experiment with a different subgenre when he was cast as a nerd who transforms into a lethal assassin in the science fiction action film Wanted, which starred Angelina Jolie. Despite star billing and an “epic snog” with Angelina Jolie, which he characterizes as “sort of odd,” he still does not consider himself to be a fully paid-up member of the A-list. “On the other hand, I take a great deal of satisfaction in the fact that I am myself. I have no problem accepting myself exactly as I am “he explains.

At the age of 16, James McAvoy was motivated to pursue a career in the performing arts as a result of a visit to his high school by the actor David Hayman. At the time of the visit, he was just 16 years old and had no previous experience in the sector. Despite the fact that he had a great time performing in the movie The Near Room (1995), directed by David Hayman, McAvoy made the decision not to pursue acting as a career. After being let out of his contract, he did, however, keep playing music by becoming a part of the PACE Youth Theatre.

As a consequence of this, he submitted an application to the Royal Navy and was well on his way to being accepted when he was made an offer of employment at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, which is located in Scotland (RSAMD). After being granted admission to what is now known as the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (formerly known as the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama), he moved to the nation’s capital shortly after receiving his diploma in the year 2000.
